I pulled out an old phonograph, popped in The Who, but there's a big, annoying, loud tone generated by the speaker. It's not the record, as I tried it with several others. In fact, it makes the sound without the needle touching anything as well.

Any ideas?

Is it phonograph or phonogram? Ah well.

Ok. I don't know anything about Phonograms but my guess is, if it is a deep humming sound, there is a wire loose somewhere between the needle rest and the output (possibly the output itself is loose).

Yeah that's it, it's a humming sound. You mean the wires connecting the speaker to the needle?

Well, it sounds to me as a loose wire somewhere or possible a loose connection.
I play music so spend a lot of time around sound equipment and we hear this sound alot.
But, I could be wrong too. But my guess is a loose connection.

Your stereo (or whatever) is not correctly grounded.
