Someone asked for directories to submit his website to http://freewebspace.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2163791

I posted www.kablamo.info and my post was deleted.

This is getting really stupid. He asks for directories, I give him one, it's deleted. I would like an explanation.

Self-promotion isn't allowed outside of the advertising forums.

Johnson

Ok, so even if it may be a good resource, being beneficial to the thread starter, you aren't allowed to post anything in the Free Services section if you own the site?

So Bruce, say you make an image hosting site. Someone asks "Where can I find a free image host?", you would not be allowed to post your site?

I have to agree with Mr. Johnson on this one, even though it is his site, it is directly relevant to the post, and it is not like he is saying, "Go here, or I will shoot you." He just offered a link, as a suggestion, like the author wanted...

In addition, the author wanted directories. Plural, meaning he wanted a whole bunch to get his site out there, one would conclude he would like as many as he can get so he can advertise his site on them. Therefore, Johnson not posting would harm the author.

Just thought I'd offer up a bit of logic here...from my point of view.

Perhaps y'all need to revisit the rules page. Or visit. Depending on the more applicable.

alley

I break the rules now and then not meaning to also. It's just all so weird and confusing.

Posting here is like living with somebody that is the home owner and you have to always watch what you say, or what you do around them or they might kick you out. I am so glad I am a home owner now.

What if he just said "Look at my sig", would you still delete his post? ...

Well then I'd say you're doing pretty good. On one of my forums it's much worse than that. lol
There's a lot of rules here though so it's not like you could send new members an PM with the rules... that would scare them away for sure ..haha

I think that's what I am going to start doing on one of my more popular forums?

Most forums have "I have read, and agree to abide by the <insert forum name> Community rules." that you have to check before you can register. Ignorance is no excuse. Just don't complain if you get a warning for something because you didn't take time to read the rules even once.

I always complain. I come from a long line of complainers ..lol

The rules should be that you cannot start a thread about your service. If someone asks for something that I only have i'm not alowed to tell them about it? I have to wait for someone else to?

Thats just stupid...

I still don't understand why that's a rule. Sure, like hosting-shack has said, you shouldn't start a thread advertising your site, but if someone asks for resources you should be allowed to post yours if it's what they need.

Jan

1. Spam and referral links are not allowed (this includes cafepress and cafeshops). You can not promote your own website here. This includes co-branded free hosts. And you're not allowed to post a URL where you get money or some type of compensation by referring others. It is however ok to post your website URL in your profile and/or in your signature.
Most large forums have similar rules, some are harsher than we are here ;)

If it was asked in an advertising forum you could. But not in the other forums.

Ok, so I'll just tell people to look in my sig, because that wouldn't be breaking the rules. Right?

Yes it would. No difference.

Yes it would. No difference.

So now your saying we can't post in the thread if we have adverts in our sig? Let me post an example.

EDIT:

So this is against the rules: http://www.freewebspace.net/forums/showthread.php?t=70096&page=7#92

Jan
May 22nd, 2006, 09:38
You have a sig which is allowed. If you said "hey check out my sig!!!111", it wouldn't be allowed.

See, there is a fine line between right and wrong here.
And this is what makes it hard for us not to get in trouble. I think in this case Mr. Johnson was sincerely trying to help out a fellow member/webmaster here and was not abusing the system.

Johnson

Ok then Jan, I suggest you go through these and delete each one. After all, they're promoting their own services, which is completely wrong in every way, even if the post helps someone:

I just skimmed through the first set of threads and didn't go very far into the longer ones.

Obviously you're not being fair. It's just like the time I had my post deleted and a warning received when I called someone ugly, yet Tandoc, in all his wisdom calls someone a "sheep ----er" and his post is still there.

Tis was I who deleted your post. You're not allowed to advertise in a forum that isn't an ads/offer forum. I don't make the rules, I just enforce them.

The links you provided upon, it'd be nice if you included the link to the entire thread so I could moderate them.

If you replace the word "showpost.php" with "showthread.php" you get the thread of that post. Took me a while to figure it out.

Robert
May 22nd, 2006, 18:27
Well I started moderating a couple and notice they are all from '05, so I stopped.

Johnson

What does that matter? The thread that they're in are still on page one of Free Services, where they will tarnish the eyes of those who view them.

Peo
May 23rd, 2006, 03:32
I can understand your opinion however in all honesty the thread starter did not ask for members to post their directories. He asked "Does anyone have a huge list of web directories I can put my link in for free?"

Is your site a huge list of web directories?

He also asked for good directories. That means he was looking for recommendations. You are not allowed to recommend your own service.

It would have been ok if he had said something like "please post your directory where I can list my site for free" or "please post any directory where I can list my site for free".

Johnson

But, there still is the matter of this, which is still confusing me:

Regarding the guy calling someone a Sheep--------, is he still a member with no warnings? If so, maybe it was overlooked?

Yeah, we can't really beat up the mods here becuase they are just trying to do their job. They can't obviously catch everything that everyone does wrong here, but we can't blame them for trying as it is a huge job that they are required to do.

the guy asked for recommendations not a personal offer, that is the difference. If that was not a rule everytime someone said "hey who would you recommend for a host" they would be bombarded by nothing more than a "magazine" full of ads with no information, reviews or experiecne

I think the mods are doing a good job here too. They manage to catch me everytime I do something wrong :P
