This question is kinda lame, and I think I already know what you are going to say, so uhh, don't flame me.

I think .name is about the dumbest one they've come up with so far.

I was not too keen on them when they were first announced either, and I've been very surprised at the number we sell. At least 15% of all our registrations in the past three months have been .name domains.

Go figure.

That's an intriguing one... You know there's already people out there salivating at the chance of getting names like comesee.us, lookat.us, and the such.

Well all of the other names cost more, .net and .com are the only ones I am even going to consider

.us is the same price as .com.

Actually there is a move afoot to bring .org back to it's roots as a domain name for not-for-profit organizations. It's likely to be successful, however existing domains will be grandfathered in all the proposals I've seen.

do private schools count as non-for-profit organizations? They make profits, but theyre schools.

So guys what do you think of .biz addresses?
I'am also thinking about buying a domain
And what do you think is the next domain ending?

guitarnerd

Eventually they will have to go to. .a, .b, .c and so on. At least that would be logical, easy to remember single letters. And you have 26 domain endings.

Every registrar will treat the different TLDs differently. Some of us will charge the same as .com. Some will charge more. Some will charge less. It depends on your marketing plan.

There are registrars who lead off with inexpensive .com domains and then jack everything else up accordingly to make up for it. The theory is that the customer will buy the.com as well as the .org, .net, .biz and .info to "cover" himself. It's OK in that scenario to lose a little money on the .com, since you'll likely make it back with interest on the rest.

By the way, I like .biz. There are still quite a few good short, one word .biz domains left, unlike .com...

All domains work the same, so it doesn't really matter which one you choose.. it's just a cosmetic. .NET, .ORG, and .INFO would seem the logical choices for family sites. (I have a .org and a .info for my family.)

In theory, .COM is a commerical site. In practice, it's unrestricted.
.INFO is fully unrestricted.
.BIZ is supposedly for businesses. My two are, but it looks like most registrars are not using the restriction.
.NET is theoretically a network. Loosely, a family could fit here.
.ORG is a non-profit organization in theory. Most families are non-profit, so you could stretch the point.
.NAME makes no sense whatever to me. You can make a subdomain on one of the others and end up with the same result.
The only other one of the new domains worth looking at is .PRO, and I haven't seen how that one is going to be handled yet. Doesn't seem like a good choice for a family though.
.US doesn't open until next month, and they aren't registering under the old system - as if anyone really wants to. (OK - they're preregistering, but who has a trademark on the family name?)
You can also use off-shore domains. I have a .com.ru for the family, but there are others. (My .com.kg and .net.kg are going away in a week or so - not worth the price. I have enough family domains, and for the extra buck could get a generic TLD instead.)

what about .tk

birkitty
March 21st, 2002, 22:10
You can have a .tk if you want it too. All domains work the same. Just be aware the free .tk's aren't your domains, so while they work like any other domain, somebody else gets to do the settings. If you buy the .tk, it would work the same.

I got a better deal on a .ws from dabot.com, so that's where I registered a birkitty domain I needed in a hurry. It could have been a .tk if the prices had been equal, but it couldn't have been a free .tk. This was destined for real hosting, and I needed a domain I controlled.
