ani-m, don't be evil please, Bandwidth (aka transfer) is this:
You have a 1 MB file. It is downloaded 10 times. That uses 10 MB transfer. Simple enough?

actually that's Data Transfer. Bandwidth is the number of bits/bytes/etc that can be transfered per second/minute/etc.

100 MB is Data Transfer, 100 Mbps is Bandwidth

Meaning of bandwidth in web hosting

In website hosting, bandwidth is the amount of information downloadable from the webserver over a prescribed period of time. In essence, it is the rate [data/time], but the time in this case is not seconds but rather a month or a week. So this rate is not like 56K or broadband, etc., which are also bandwidth but are measured per second. Web hosting companies often quote a monthly bandwidth limit for a website, for example 100GB/month. If visitors to the website download a total greater than 100GB in one month, the bandwidth limit will have been exceeded.

lol, that's ridiculous, 100MB is disk space 100mbps is connection speed, bandwidth is measured in gigabytes, and it's already been explained by the wikipedia, but ^^^ is wrong.....

So... Bandwidth is...

Take an example you have a drawer or a box.
So when you put a thing (book or toys) into a box, you are using inbound bandwidth.
Then when you take a thing out from a box, you are using outbound bandwidth.

So there is in and out bandwidth, now for computer/hosting term:
In bandwidth is when you/user upload/put your file into your server.
Out bandwidth is when you/user download/take a file from your server.

Hope this help you :)

No... connection speed IS bandwidth IS maximum throughput. All three of these terms are one and the same.

Data-transfer is the amount of data you transfer over that line. Bandwidth is how fast that data is (or can be) transfered over that line.

Try this:

You have a two-lane road. Only two cars can drive past the same point simultaneously, right? Well, let's convert the two-late road to a six-lane highway. Now we've tripled the throughput (bandwidth, if you will). Now just because the new highyway can theoretically handle 6 cars at all times doesn't mean that it will. The actual number of cars using it would be data-transfer.

my post was not an explanation the wikipedia did that, I was merely pointing out that when you see 100mbps this means connection speed, when you see 100GBs however this normally means bandwidth, which is correct....

simpler
bandwidth is how much you download or upload to your server
meaning the amount of MBs have been transferd from your hosting account to a user or a visitor.
it does have a limit. like 5GB resetes every 30 Days

If I may add, the bandwidth can be one of two things, the speed of the link your server is on the internet or sometimes it is refering to the data-transfer (which is incorrect but is has become a common mistake) ;)

Bandwidth means the amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time. It is usually expressed in bits per second (bps), kilobits per second (kbps), or megabits per second (mps).

And now even gigabits per second (gbps)
