Unique visitors (per day): The number of individuals who come to your site. If I show up 5 times it's counts as 1 unique and 5 visits (I think that's right).

Hits: This one I'm sure about. 100 uniques average 5 pageviews each and you have 500 hits for the day.

thanks guys
so basically a page that has 5 pictures, a header file, could be counted as 7 hits as it would count the main page + 5 picture files + a header file .... theoratically.

No.
A good stats program will show unique visits (the unique individuals who came to your site today), and hits should equal the number of times a whole page got served.

I read a comment about "Awstats counting photos as hits", and would like to learn more about that, so I'm more knowledgable about stats. Pix and the header / footer should not be consider hits.

Hits count the number of times a certain file has been accessed, most sites have several different sections in a site, a header, a footer, side navigations and etc. each which come togather on one page so hits would count more then 1 when people go on that 1 page. Visits are number of unique people, and impressions are number of pages people have seen.
