Normal setup time is 24 hours to 48 hours, depending on who your provider is it can differ from instant setup to over 1 week.

The providers I went with would do it anywhere from 6 hours to 1 week depending on what I ordered. I would normally be on the high end of that cause I always have the server hardened, secured, and what not.

Anything from Staminus.Net usually within 20 minutes to an hour tops.

A good provider will take between 24 hours to 48 hours. Anything less and they may be risking their network to fraud and anything more isn't good for the consumer. You should ask to not have your credit card billed until the server is ready for use.

I don't know what 24-48hrs has to do with fraud measures. It only takes a few minutes to properly verify an account for fraud measures.

There are plenty of fraud measures that can take time to complete; it depends on the order too. For a $400+ order/month we call the credit card company to confirm the order is indeed legitimate and may speak to the customer briefly if concerns arise. If the transaction is deemed high-risk, it may also be necessary to get photo ID.
Its better to spend 24 hours and insure the order is legitimate than to accidently host a spammer, phisher, or child pornographer. Perhaps that's just my mindset, and I'm sure existing and potential customers wouldn't want to be on a network that takes risks / slacks when it comes to fraud.

Not to mention the fact that customers will often request to upgrade or downgrade equipment, have a specific OS/partition in mind, and may have other special instructions which might take time.

what takes so long though? It only takes a few minutes to call the customer, the cc company, and do a small background check.
Many companies can get units provisioned in a few hours and still perform proper fraud measures, but then again some places work faster than others, have measures to deploy servers faster and more efficiently

2CheckOut have an anti-fraud system, they will do everything for us. Of curse they will charge for that (5.5%)

I am with Avail on this...Setup time on all servers we order is less than 12 hours and this is if we order in the middle of the night. I'm guessing everyone here is speaking of new server orders...Because if I am a current customer of a company and I order additional servers from them, if it takes them over 24 hours....Heh...I will cancel the order and move along to someone who can fill it in a timeframe I need.
Exactly why we don't deal with Layeredtech...Their orders I have seen take up to 80 hours to fill. Not my cup of tea.
Staminus' complete system is automated with servers already in rack. They push the button once they call you and verify your number etc, server order is filled. I think the biggest thing is depending on really how reliable the company is your buying from.

We got our dedicated server at Surfspeedy in more than one week.
At LiquidWeb it took only about 30hrs.

I agree with "rohitj" --- It generally takes around 24-48 hrs.

With Softlayer it was setup pretty much four hours after the payment.
With Layeredtech it was pretty much a week (surfspeedy uses LT facilities).
