How do free hosts make money? I can understand making money through click-throughs, but I really can't see you folks making that much of banner ads. How do you make money by requiring someone to post on your forum?
The reason I ask is my partner and I are discussing breaking into free hosting, but the numbers don't add up with buying a new server, the DAS, and at least another T1.

well posting keeps people coming back, and so increases the chance they will click on an ad.
as for making money, that hasn't happened to me yet, I put $600 in and am only just gettin $100 back, but then I'm not doing it for money, so I'm not fussed.

I believe a lot of free hosts is not earning anything, in fact, if they can balance up, it will be considered as a good month. We give free web host because we want to share. Free web host isn't a path to go if you are looking to earn profit.

Ditto to all posts above. All for good will and help others, especially those who really deserved serious hosting :)

This is pretty much what inspired me to seek a free-reseller. If it works out I may rent my own in the not too distant future......
...and give a 20gb reseller to luis123456 :P

Free hosts make money view placing CPM and PPC ads on the hosted pages. It is possible to make a small profit but it's not worth the effort and time wasted. Some hosts also put textlinks on all of the hosted page and sell that ad space. Those that require forum posting do it in the hope that the members will keep coming back and eventually click on ads or even sign up for a paid hosting with their referral code.

You'd be suprised not many free hosts make money, I ran a pretty successful free host for a year didn't require ad's but it's just not worth starting out. With so many paid hosting companies giving everything they can think off for $1 a month it's very hard to make ends meet.
Advertisers don't like free hosts that much as hosting companies very rarely keep an eye on what they are hosting.
It's very hard to make money - if your planning todo it for a full-time income don't bother Paper Rounds pay more.

If you are smart, its relatively easy to make money as a free host. The question is, do you know what it takes to stay in this business? It is not about hardware or software but about who you allow yourself to host. Most of the people here don't earn money because they don't monitor who they host. When you do not monitor who you host, for all you know, you could have 20 mock sign ups from another country stating to be from the U.S. The problem with this is that companies like Yahoo and Clicksor (a.) only really want U.S hits and clicks and will pay for that and (b. ) clicksor requires like 50% of your audience to be from the U.S or something like this and so they will (if you dont meet this requirement) just cancel your earnings.
It is not an easy business unless you know what you are doing. Each server of mine, and for reference: AMD 3800 80GB minimum 2GB ram CentOS 2TB transfer per box (about 150$/mo) earns me about 200$/mo. Small profit, but profit. These numbers are from a month or two ago. Recently I have begun doing new ad routines and launching new projects so those numbers have doubled, but not due to the free hosting.
Good luck, hope my two cents made some sense. NO quoting or flames please.
