to establish a long term company for stable income without going to work for some random moron. Also to launch another undisclosed project which will require a high knowledge of the hosting industry

I saw an opportunity back then in Windows hosting (4 years ago) due to limited competition and high prices.
So it was not a hobby. But yes it was an area that interested us and we decided to put money/time into it.

First I started with a huge, free, 1&1 web hosting account, I knew some people that needed hosting, so I offered some of the unused space in my account to them for a fee. Then I realized, wait a minute, how would a control panel work, thus sparked my first reseller, and my first hosting biz. Sooner, rather than later, you eventually figure out what you're doing.

I've always been interested in the hosting industry and used to read forums such as this one where hosts were all helping each other out and knowing this I decided to start my own as a hobby to see what it was like, and a year later, I still love being a host and being able to sponsor sites for those that do really need it and being able to offer quality hosting at a low cost.

Started as a hobby when I realized I was paying more on hosting fees for my websites than a reseller account would cost. Got myself a reseller account and sold off the extra space to break even. And over the years it grew to become an even bigger hobby!

2) As a hobby.

Started as a hobby.
Recently I realised, "Jayzus there's nobody in my area providing cPanel hosting with Fantastico!" so I started Déise Host.
In the near future I hope to bring it a step further and go back to providing resellers.

I originally started through an interest in game servers about 4-5 years ago and since then I have gradually developed things and changed to mainly offering dedicated servers and web hosting as a proper limited company. I still enjoy what I do but it is now more than just a hobby and more of a job.

Started iiPanel back in April 2005 just to have an additional line of business. During Jan. 2006 decided to grow it to get advanced experience in the hosting industry as well as earn additional income. Hosting industry is competitive but is now in our blood.

I was fed up of the lack of service I was getting as a customer, and though, "Hey... I'm a Unix Sysadmin and familiar with Linux, I might as well do it myself, then I know it's done properly". I bunged a bit of cash at it to rent a dedicated box and sold a few accounts.

It was a natural extension to the web & database consultancy we already did.

Never looked back :)

Why do I hear that many hosts do not make money out of their hosting business?
Why do you think this is happening to many?

Maybe it is lack of planning?

As you can see this is a free hosting forum... So most people here do it as a hobby - They don't get profit out of it.

Alot of them close down because they think they will get about 5 customers in a week.

October 23rd, 2006, 17:12
lol this is true
they may end up getting 5 customers but with each one paying $1 or $2 per month, and then no to forget the killer paypal transaction fees.
This is a tough business I think.

Paypal transaction fees go about 6-7% depending on sender, receiver, and amount...

I am interest in creating a web host company, but i dont know if this really will make profit, i see many websites offering hosting for us$8 or us$11 so how much would i make like us$3 for each account, i think this is not a good business, so i decided to create something more interesting, i develop a web hosting directory and i win more money for the advertisement, in case you are interest in trading or exchange link with my web hosting directory.

Seriously though, to get serious profit from free hosting, you need to put in a lot of hard work, just like in any other job.

I just like doing this, and also I need a place to host all my stuff :P

I started a hosting company to broaden the features and influence of my network. i did it to be able to offer more features, and as a hobby i guess.

I also wanted to provide the anime market with easy free hosting, thus encouraging the online anime market even more.

I guess money does come into it, but only to cover costs of other servers and scripts so i can provide an overall better experience for the users of our network.

=)

You'r laughing from the very answer you gave haha. you'r laughing at you haha.

It was a joke
IE I started something 1000000s of others are doing to be differnt(Excluded from the world)

The last bit means I started hosting to be differnt to other providers(Not saying all are bad but a hell of alot are) and provide good service.

But I know you know I know you know what i ment so its ok.

Lot's of great posts in this thread. :-)

I've always been interested in the web (since I was 11 years old), and I started building/developing/managing websites at an early age. A few years back, I realized that I really wanted to "wet my feet" in the webhosting world, and that's exactly what I did. Did I think I was going to be successful? Nah, not really. Wow, was I wrong.

The webhost that I founded turned out to be one of the most successful free/paid webhosts in the hosting world. This, of course, was partly due to the fantastic start we had (thanks to the traffic from FWS), and from there, it took off. :classic2:

I love the webhosting industry; it's a major passion of mine (along with web development and design). It's a major, major hobby.

Well, i started going on the web at about... when I was probably like in the second or first grade? It was not much of an interest back then. But when more time passed, I was getting more interested about the web and technology (mostly computers) and eventually started a small, hosting site.(even tho it died out after a month but it was free hosting) so I would consider it as a hobby. My thoughts formed at the age of 10, and discovered more and more up until now.

Hobby, still is, low profit (if any), I just have the funding to back it, and motivation of many non-fluent English speakers...

The service which is free of which you offer is goodness.

To get awarded a nobel peace prize for saving a bus full of school children from going on a cliff.

Seeing as how I haven't been able to do that, I'll just settle for the hobby/making money.
