As an owner of a former very popular freehost(StoneRocket) i would like to just express a few points about freehosting.

This is my story.

What got me into freehosting? When I first starting using a free host provider (freenukehosting) I was amazed how much more I got than my standard paid provider and got hooked very quicky into the community/forum.
Although they was not without problems, but back then i did not know was going on ! at very least once a month they went down (server overload/crashed)
Inexperienced me back then was none the wiser but not i know they was attacked on a daily basis (probably from users on here) and they was not earning enough.

Skip forward! How did i get into starting a freehost?

Well from being gutted my favourite community (ever) had gone i looked into getting a server myself and decided on a VPS from a very good company.
So I thought I`d start my own free host`s already had a domain which i got the year before! never imagined it would be used for a host, (but that just shows how things can turn out) Anyway i started it offering 500mb free webspace.

It took a couple of months to get some real traffic with the aid of paid ads, and at first iwas not init to make make money i wanted to emulate my favourite community free had ceased.
And as i found out myself its not easy, we had users applying for free hosting just to abuse us (torrents etc etc)

Im a little tired now but i will post the rest tomorrow.

I used to be with this company. It was quite good untill it "died". I had free hosting with stonerocket, it was quite good, but then I upgraded to paid hosting. For months I was happy, but then it really went bad, my account was suspended for a month by their datacenter and I was asking them to give me a back up for weeks and I get no responce. Then I had to threaten them that I have contacted a soliciter and am prepared to take this into the law. They gave me a backup a week later.

Yeah they used to be a nice company with a nice community. :) But then unfortunately all good things come to an end. I have my OWN hosting company now (frosthost). btw im using layeredtech as well for the servers.

I'm not going to give away the rest of the story, it's best if djb says it himself.

you have a fair point thats why we have spent months updating our hosting and not had any problems since we stopped offering free webhost.

It's a shame that there are so many idiots out there that abuse free web hosts.
Free web hosts are the ultimate cool people in my book!!!
And I would never abuse them.

It just takes one person to screw up a project like free hosting and it's so unfair to those who genuinely need to use the service.
I quit providing free hosting simply because a small majority of people kept abusing it.
