About 1 month and a half ago, one of my friends emailed me about getting a webspace for him. He owns a medium forum about Chinese history and he has some financial problems to maintain the webspace. I searched several places and finally found setechosting’s service on ebay. It was quite deal, unlimited webspace and unlimited bandwidth at 8.88 dollars/year. I contact them before I purchased 5 year service for 44.4 bucks on Sep. 5th, 2006.

At first few days, it was fine. Transition was smooth. But it didn’t last for one week. All of sudden, I can’t access my website and the cpanel. So I emailed Setechosting about this again and again. After about 7 emails and one week later, I got a reply from Setechosting support. How surprise. Here is what exactly what they wrote:

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for getting in touch.

I have checked your account and found that it has been suspended
pending termination as it is in breach of our terms of service. An
email was sent to the accounts registered email address but I have
reproduced the main points below.

The account was hosting copyrighted material that is not allowed on
our server. (for instance there are downloadable copies of several
Harry Potter books).

More importantly is that the account contained 2 viruses that are
currently not active, however they have been highlighted by our
monitoring software as a severe threat to the safety and security of
the server.

I am sorry that we could not give more advanced warning before
suspension but we have to act immediately when a virus is detected.

Please visit http://www.setechosting.com/tos.html to view our terms of
service.

This is very strange, they didn’t tell where is the Harry porter file and the virus files. The web I host is a non profit forum to discuss Chinese history. There is no need to provide some downloadable material, especially no need for Harry Potter. Before the site was hosted at www.xinnet.com and now it is hosted at www.ehost.net. Both of them didn’t tell me that I have virus or copyright problems.

I emailed them back 3 times explain this to them and tell them they can delete anything they want.
Finally someone named Clara told me she was going to restore my account. But still after one week, I didn’t get anything from her. So I emailed her saying about when I can get my account back and if not soon, I will find another host. Then she replied my saying she needs to check all my files manually for the copyright issue. So I emailed her back that she can delete all my files and I can set up a clean forum, which looks like a half hour job to me. But I still got no reply for one week. Now 35 days after my website was down, I still didn’t get anything good from Setechosting. In their website, it is clearly mentioned 15 days unconditional money back guarantee. I just used their service for seven days. It seems I am qualified for this. So I emailed them about asking my money back. Two week has passed no answer. What the hell.

I have been a web master for five years and have met several web hosting providers. Honestly, I’ve never had such experience before. What I have with setechosting is not the only worst webhosting experience. It is also my worst consuming experience. From past 1 month, everyday I can receive tons of email from the website members complaining about website inaccessible. The only thing I can say here is Setechosting = Hell, for the following reasons:
1, Slow response. They stopped my website without notifying me. They say their support is 24X7. This really means they gonna reply your email after 24X7, which is one week.

2, Unreasonable. They keep saying I have virus files and Harry porter ebook. But I asked them to tell me the name of the files so I can check them. They never tell me and never tell me why.

3. Strange. I told them they can erase all my files and just give me a clean account. They refused and didn’t tell me why.

Finally I got email from them telling me “, we are trying our best to accommodate you as best we can” What a joke.

I guess now that have learnt from your mistakes and that there is no such thing as "unlimited", you should be careful not to let this happen to you again.

Sorry to hear about your experience and hope that your review will help out others, though the price should have been a warning (unlimited for 8USD/year? A little too big to be true).

1. never buy webhosting from ebay
2. 8.88 dollars for the whole year is not possible. There must be a catch
3. Like previous posters said, there is no "unlimited", especially for that price.

Take this as a lesson.

Like many user will tell you.

1) Never Buy Hosting From Any Auction, Even Worse At Such Cheap Price.
2) There Is Nothing Called "Unlimited" And Furthermore At US$8.88 A Year, Seem To Be Unbelievable.

Come on people, what happened to ''not guilty until proven guilty'', people JUMP the gun too easy, remember, there are TWO (2) sides to every story, for all we know the host could be telling the truth yet the client wants to slam them for what ever reason.

Am ashamed of all that have posted in this thread as you haven't highlighted this important fact that there are two sides to every story.

Yes, the OP *may* be telling the truth but without the hosts input you shouldn't say anything!.

Shame on you all.

craig, even if nothing happened to the thread OP, I would still give the same advice.

Never buying webhosting from ebay, never trust anyone offering $8.88/year, never trust anyone offering unlimited everything.

The advice does not change.

Ok, I understand what your saying but please tell me WHY you shouldn't buy web hosting from eBay, I know ALLOT of providers who sell on ebay who have been around since late 2000 & there still selling on ebay.

Never buying webhosting from ebay

Why not? I could say the same about any item on ebay.
