I mean I bought one today for one of my current web projects that I decided to change formats on. It was originally a TV fan site .. but I recently decided to allow movie fan pages and other types of fan pages so my domain has to be changed because my .com domain has the word "TV" in it.
Did you ever try to find a cool .com domain for a general fan page site? ...OMG!!! .. it is near impossible. They are all taken, and so are the .net domains. So I found a good short domain and bought the .org version. Since my community is a tight nit community that offers free fan pages to my members I figured it would fall under the non profit category.
I love my .com domains as much as the next guy, but I guess a .com domain doesn't really make the website anyways. I mean look at freewebspace.net ... It's not the shortest domain in the world, and it is not a .com domain and it is a very popular successful site.
I guess as long as you have a loyal following, and you put your keywords in your meta tags you will be alright.
