It is very plain .. Although the bulk and focus of your site will, once it's complete, be your content, you might want to make a more interesting / colourful layout.
While something as extreme as http://webmonkey.com/ isn't necessary, it is nice to add a splash of colour.. And I might suggest moving your content to the centre of the page rather than the left.
A good start, needs a few finishing touches! ;)
Edit: Actually, browsing quickly around Webmonkey, I found this page: http://webmonkey.com/webmonkey/frontdoor/beginners.html and I think it's a good demonstration of what I meant. It has a nice, interesting header, but the rest of the page is just the commercial, the content itself, and the navigation menus. How do you feel about making your site somewhat in this vein?

Yea, it can be tough when you are just starting out.
As for getting more hits.. Make sure you're linked in appropriate search results for the major search engines. Here are a few links I found that you could use:
To get listed at Yahoo!: http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html
To get listed at Google: http://www.google.com.au/addurl/?continue=/addurl
Choose your keywords, etc, carefully.
Once you have a layout that YOU like and people here generally like (you can't please everyone normally, but if a few people from here like it, that's a fair indicator), search around for other sites with similar content, and try and organise a link/button/banner swap - they link you, you link them.
Put your website URL in your forum signatures - **don't spam** it, but in your signature you could have a link saying 'Visit my site for programming tips' or whatever. That way people can see your link anytime you make a post.
But I wouldn't do any of this until you're happy with your design!

its lame, it sucks, it is the worst site ever and makes me want to gouge my eyes out, it just makes me want to vomit...now, that being said, i am just messing with you. it is not all that bad actually. it is just very plain and its structure is not all that great. anhedonia made a lot of good points. take them into consideration, and you shall have a very nice site. keep plugging away at it, and it will all come together. good luck.

There was little structure and lack of colors. It almost made me want to die.
