Hello

i've been at the forum for around 6 months (maybe even a year.? :confused4 )

and in the past few weeks i have noticed people making silly requests being very ruse & aggresive asking for hosting that would cost $10+ in the real world. They also demand NO AD's. how can that work? just some questions.

1) has it always been this "demanding"?
2) do you get swamped with sign-ups that don't ever use the accounts. and if so. how many a week
(if you don't mind sharing..)

i get about 40+ signups a week which are inactive. (but thats because i have instant signup.... ) (might have to do something about that instant sign-ups)

make it so that people have to register on your forum or something and wait a while to request for hosting. That'll weed out most of the weak ones. Also, there was another thread like this a bit ago. It still might be there.

I used to offer free hosting which was ad supported.
We used to get over 40 a week and about 70% of these were either inactive (blank page) or didn't put the ads up as required.

I do find requests for free hosting is getting more demanding. They don't want ads, they don't want to post for hosting and most of them do not want to link back to the provider.

I also learned that it's a bad idea to offer both free and paid hosting on the one website as people who are willing to buy hosting will think twice when they see you offer free hosting as well. I think they feel that the service would be less reliable. Understandable of course.

But yeah. Instant signups for free hosting is a bad idea. Have them request it on a forum or something.

Well, if the signup process is integrated into your community software, then you can keep an eye on bogus and duplicate accounts a lot easier, I don't have that many empty accounts, that's not to say they all get visited, but more than 90% are in use.

defo demands are too much, in 04/05 they were requesting 100mb now they want everything maybe might as well give your server away.

What makes the whole thing more confusing at times is hosts are actually giving large amounts of resources away for free. Silly really.
