I seen a post about how many people are asking to much and there should be guide lines explaining to newbies how much they really need,
even tho this is unoffical and has nothing to do with freewebspace.net heres my input to allyou people requesting crazy amount of diskspace.
Firstly you need to really ask yourself do you want a unstable host and 10GIGS or do you want a stable host and only have what you REALLY need.

I can tell you, I have around 15 sites hosted on 1 dedi all the people that are hosted there have over 1GIG limits.... and, They always have and mostlikley always will only use around the 50mbs they are now (large site) so at this time im hosting 15 paid sites for people and using 750 MBS Now In total the quoters its around 10-20GIG for 15 sites (Im not in to maths :P)

So lets work this out your telling these free hosts you need 10GIG when im hosting 15 paid sites totaling to 750mbs.

Bandwidth,
Alot of people starting a website dont really relise or want to belive first you need people to use bandwidth (there not going to come out of no where)

Did you know theres 1000s of sites opend each day?

I also dont total much bandwidth for the 15 people Im hosting as a matter of fact I use more for my 4 sites and updates of the server.

The other thing to consider is this:
lets say your thinking of making the next big myspace
firstly for a project of this size if it takes off you wont find this under the free hosting forum or even the paid hosting forum for a project like this you need atleast a vps or at most a dedi server.

Personal sites + good uptime: Firstly to recive this dont come here thinking your going to get what you want by saying "well if you dont do this i wont be with you" to be honest even in the paid hosting game people seem nicer
You get more when your nicer and treat every offer like a gift not a god given right!

I have read many requests and thos that have asked nicley have recived far more offers than thos thinking there king!
I and many others find alot of requests dam right rude!

I only have to read this forum to work out others are just as unhappy with some of the requests as me!

Now lets explain some of the finer details
How much space will a forum really use? around 50MBS MAX
How much space would a pic posting forum Use? why its small not much as a matter of fact it takes a $700+ to recive a 2mb photo
Mobile phones take around a 50+kb (webcams the same)
Most normal people that post and know what there doing even with a $700+ camera know to resize befor uploading.
and the rest that have cheap nasty cameras
will upload a 250kb pic
So why your small really you need the total of 1GIG MAX!!!!
How much space will phpnuke use with full adons? The biggest phpnuke iv ever seen was one of 75mbs with just about everything you can get.
How much space will a personal site with a few logos and pics use? around 5 - 10 MBS.
How much bandwidth will I use?
This is a harder question however when i was using free hosts I never went passed 1GIG per month as a matter of fact I was well under.
I would say atmost if your unwilling to pay for your website you dont really care about it to much and mostlikley wont end up using much (as much as you would like to think otherwise this is a fact)

I susgest asking yourself all this befor requesting anything and always remember the less you ask for inlife the more you get!

If anyone dont like anything iv said please feel free to reply
(I know my english isnt good and I dont claim to be a english teacher so befor you decide to turn this post in to a spelling be forget it!)

Have fun guys

You need to contact the hosts you possibly want to try out or like the sound of, and then see what they have got to say about your requirements.

Those sales responses will make it much easier for you to choose which host to go for, I'm sure.

Well for one I'm not a free host myself so why should I rewrite this, and I was stating an obvious fact that people ask for way more than they need when asking for free web-hosting.

And I don't understand how you "quoted" me but for some reason I received an e-mail from freewebspace saying this topic had a reply.. when I had never subscribed or even replied to this thread? thats why I was so confused?

Nice thread, thanks. But it's even more appropriate in case of paid hosting, as it's where customers are really spoilt by the size of packages.

I think i would have to dissagree with you on that one, low prices or not, big packages or not, they are PAYING for a service and as such are entitled to more rights than someone who is effectively living of the hosts good grace.

You have to consider things like this for a second. a host like 1&1 are able to offer 2100 for $5.00 a month, They can hand out these ridiculous deals because they are a VERY big host. Smaller hosts cant offer this kinda thing so cheap, and therefore charge more, but if you are paying for a host and arent using all your space, then its bad for you not the host.

sorry if i didnt make sense, and your right underg, someone really did need to write this thread. just to add something to that 50gb bandwidth a month means 6,000,000 pageviews a year...... i dont use that much on raw hits, and i have 4 sites.

I'll rewrite it if you like when I get time.. But its not my area, I may have an opinion, but I think it should be a community effort to design some sort of guide.

And if its good enough the FWS team may sticky it

Times like this we need a wiki sorta thing so we can all just edit and change parts as we wish, would be far easier haha.

FWS (unofficial) Free Request Guide:

If you have taken the time to browse these forums a bit before requesting, you will doubtless know that many hosts take ill to people who request large amounts of hosting, especially if they dont need the space they ask for.

The purpose of this (unofficial) Guide is to inform the requester of a few base facts. Please read this, it will put you in good stead when you do request.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Be Polite...
It doesn't seem to occur to most of those who request free hosting, that what they are infact requesting is for someone to provide you with a service
that would, under normal circumstances, cost you money - totally free of charge.

Now you will find that free web hosts don't mind doing this, we would be in the wrong job if we did. However what we DO mind is people who come to these forums and demanding free hosting without any courtesy or thought spared for the provider. As if they consider it their right. Lets just get one thing straight...... Free Hosting is NOT a right !

If you want to know what i mean by this, well that should be pretty obvious:

I want free hosting 5gb space and 50gb bandwidth, I Wont Post2Host and I wont put up any ads, as i NEED to place my own.

I NEED this fast

SO, any offers...?

Be Realistic...

Did you know that thousands of sites open everyday? From the amount of space you are requesting, I'm Guessing you guys all think you are going to be the next Myspace in a Weekend. While i am not denying that you may succeed, something of that size will take years to develop, and you wont be running it off free hosting. The Chances are that your idea has been tried before and you will be heading into a competative market, you wont always be a hit success.

When you are requesting your space and Bandwidth, please consider how much space you will infact be using. To give you a small guidline, one of my newest sites has 150 members, and while admittedly the forum isnt hosted with the rest of my site, ive never used more than 1 GB a month on hits, Uploading images is the only time at which i have used more.

You will Find that hosts will probably offer you more space than you ask for anyway, but if they see you asking for a lot to begin with, they may be less kind.

Finally, i have often found, that ( with a few exceptions, and i am not pointing any fingers!) a host that is willing to provide you with 20gb space and 200gb of bandwidth for free, will probably not be around for very long, I suppose this is also a message to those hosts out there, unless you are Very confiedent in your ability to maintain your service while providing that much, don't offer it.

Facts:

1 GB B/w per month = 100,000 Pageviews

50GB B/W per month = 60,000,000 Pageviews per annum.

One application will on MOST occasions use no more than 1 MySQL Databases
Infact many applications will allow multiple installation on 1 DB

A 15 page website (minus addons) should take up no more than 2 MB

A high quality picture will take up 2 MB while most will take up a mere 70 KB

1024 KB = 1 MB 1024 MB = 1 GB

Frequently Asked Questions:

How much space will I need for a forum? - 100 MB MAX

How much space will i need for a Picture forum? - Assuming you dont all have $700+ Cameras then no more than 500 MB - If your Cameras are that powerful then you should be changing the pictures to .GIF anyway

How much will I need for phpNuke with full addons? - 100 MB MAX
(the same applies to most other CMS scripts)

How much space will a personal site with few Logos/images use? - 5-10 MB MAX

My site gets 300,000 PageViews a Month how much B/W do i need? - To be safe I will say 5GB MAX for other figures see the guide earlier on in the post.

How Much will a Flash file Use? - 50 MB MAX (i've never seen one that big and that includes games)

I want to host direct downloads for my site, how much space will i need? - Forget it. Get out your Check Book.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Still unsure about something, ask the person offering to host you, they will be more than happy to help you out.

I hope you found this guide useful to you.... (happy host hunting:P)

Regards,
AMChost
