It isnt a good idea usually to set up a site running from your computer, the strain will be to much for a normal Pc, especially if you are going to be using it as well.

December 25th, 2006, 21:12
no... if you want to have a website, get free hosting.
If you want to be a host, get a reseller account or a dedicated server.
People that run servers from home give hosting a bad name, theres no redundancy, or reliability.
ex... if a server crashes at a dc, they know what to do and can usually get it up pretty quickly... If your computer crashes, You might be screwed.
And what about when your power goes out? Datacenters have generators to keep everything running.
What happens when your internet goes down?
I could go on forever... its such a bad idea.

Please help me to answe the question:-) :-) :-)
brutetal
December 25th, 2006, 22:34
But why bother to use your computer to host many websites?
Even though its possible, its just not reliable as a server in a DC.
Its really for personal use and thats it.
Are you really going to leave it on 24/7?
Just get a reseller.

Hum, sir/dude
I looked at your other threads and it seems you require/offer web hosting relates services.
Now, If you were intending to host your hosting business from your computer, let me just say lol.
At least get a reseller from a normal company. There is no way to host clients on your wimpy domestic bandwidth.

There is loads to think about.
Connection speed and bandwidth
Your isp might not allow home webservers
Security (someone could hack your computer and steal documents)
leaving your computer on 24/7 (good venting to stop over heating)
i'm not trying to put you of i just think paying or free hosting would be the best answer. if you just testing out and your interested in servers and want to learn setting up a home server would be great to experiment with not pro host.
Good luck :)

Google 'CentOS'. It's pretty versatile and user friendly. From setup you can just have it set up Apache, PHP, and MySQL. For virtual machines I recommend VMware Server or VMware Workstation. Both work great and are free.

Home edition dosnt come with IIS.
You'll need to upgrade to XP Pro for a limited IIS5
Or google for how to install IIS5 from an Xp Pro disk on Xp Home, there's some tweaks available.
Or just install apache. they have a build for win32, which should work just as fine as IIS.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but running a webhost from your computer is not exactly the best idea. Not only will it consume a majority of the computer's resources, but your ISP (internet service provider) would probably not be happy (most of them do not allow the practice of running a home server).

doesn't Cpanel cost? i do also think that linux should be the OS you should use with apache.
when i use to do shoutcast tv i had to make sure the video bitrate was a good size to support more users to watch with the bandwidth i have on my internet i have 2mb/s and the upstream is the one i had to deal with and so will you with running a host on your computer. most of the time the upstream is lower then your downstream. unless you have a 100mb/s connection which would cost loads you should be able to provide a good hosting service.
but once you got cpanel a massive connection ect it would proberly me cheaper to get a dedi server.

So, either
1) convert your windows box to linux and install a free panel (vhcs)

3) purchase hosting somewhere else
In either cases, all 3 options have been described in this thread and you still have no idea what was said or what to do.

375kbps upload from china to los angeles. Pretty good.
You can go ahead and setup your small linux for for testing, but beware that with your connection you can only upload at ~45kb/s. Which is still ok for a personal site, but becomes problematic if 45 people are viewing the site at the same time, (each only gets 1kb/s). I hope you get the idea.

I'm chinese myself and I go back to Beijing every once in a while and yes the connection there generally sucks. By the looks of it, this guy is either joking or does not know what he is talking about. I draw my conclusion from these points:
1. He asked if Linux supported Windows - Now this would be a valid question if he was talking about WinEX or Lindows but I doubt he was talking about an OS emulator for that.
2. He wants to host a website on Windows XP, home edition it would seem. Who does that?
3. He doesn't seem to know anything about apache, php, or server managed.
4. Somehow even though $3/month for hosting is expensive, $1200 for cpanel is somehow affordable.
This thread overall makes absolutely no sense.
But back to the point: What are your computer specs. If your going to be hosting a website and plan on using your computer at the same time, you'd better at least have a Dual-core processor witgh 2GB of RAM. Your website may be down anytime you are playing a game or running a serious application.
Theoretically I could host my website(s) on my laptop, but that just wouldn't be smart, thats why I pay over $200/month for a dual-core dedicated server.

Geez, VHCS is a control panel.
PHP5 is a program.
Apache is a program.
MySQL is a program.
VHCS can control the above 3 programs. Create users, databases, email, etc.
This thread is dead. We aleady suggested every reasonable option. I suggest you go do some homework. If you don't know the difference between a control panel and php, we're going nowhere.
