"What's that noise? What's that smell?"

The noise and the smell was my laptop heating up to the point where it actually burned the plastic cap off my power cord.

What the ---- is that? :p

Obviously these things just don't happen normally. Would something in my laptop just be broken? I can't figure out why it would get THAT hot, and even then, how it would actually become that UNSAFE.

Has this ever happened to anyone before?

Scary! Where have you had it? Just normal use at home?

You got one of those faulty batteries?

If it's under warranty, I'd say swap it. Otherwise, backup regularly and then claim under insurance.

There might be a problem with the heatsink over the CPU if it's getting that hot... but opening it up would void warranty.

My laptop charger got extreamly hot not to the point of melting, however the annual powertest as it was a loan through school fail and they gave me a new plug. Good source of heating

This type of thing isn't too uncommon, i've seen it more than a few times @ work. In almost every case, its a short in the AC Adapter that caused the problem, not the laptop itself. Regardless, make sure you backup your files before trying again with a new AC Adapter.
