How? I wasn't aware that DSL even got that fast. I'm currently on broadband cable, and running at 4.0 MBPS, while the fastest my cable company will offer is 6 MBPS.

In the UK 8mbps is standard on DSL broadband and 6mbps on cable. And DSL is not cable. DSL can currently support faster speeds than cable.

ADSL2 here is 16mbps. ADSL2+ in some parts of the world can be 24mbps or higher.

They do ADSL2 in the Uk the company is called Bethere, Terrible speeds. It depends on the quality of the phone line yada yada yada. I only got 2.5MB at the best of times, and it cost £24 per month

Not i'm with Sky (BSkyB) on the £10 per month 16MB plan and get 2.3MB, So it isn't always better... I want fibre optic cables to be laid to houses :d 1GB broadband! Lol

ADSL2 is part fiber optics / part regular dsl.
Fiber optics reach the main central office and it then splits via reg dsl. Bell does that and its called Optimax. But pretty expensive. 16mbps was about 180/mo couple months ago when I left.

Currently I got 10mbps cable with unlimited downloads. Very nice :)

the connection I would love to have is OC-3072, if we could really have such speeds.

There's a Japanese power company doing 100Gbps over powerline.

Over here, SBC (formerly Pacbell, so. california), DSL is still all phone line G.lite DSL, fastest residential speed 3.0 mbps. And Verizon isn't rolling out fiber near us anytime soon :(
