It looks sweet, but very expensive ($499 w/2 yr contract).

Would be better than a PDA though.

It looks really sexy! I'm not too bothered with the price considering the price of buying a separate iPod and phone.

It's awesome, and I plan to buy one!!! :)

I especially like that it contains a full version of OS X, and can display Websites normally.

i really want one!
sadly its only available in the USA atm and i just shelled out for a brand spanking new ipod mini.
the price seems fairly reasonable, i paid £280 ($560) total for my ipod and phone so that seems ok...
i love the features included the one issue i can see is that phones go out of date far faster than say an ipod. within 2 years it will be out of date:s

I cant import one either as cingular now hardwire their phones to lock them to the network (or so i have heard)

Yeah, I am pretty sure Nokia or some other big player will create a phone matching or even beating it very quickly.

I hope they release it for sale in the UK soon. Also hope they can make it so you can get it on contract with t-mobile & others.

If they only had it on a different provider, I really hate Cingular and have no plans on going back to that dreaded company. If it ever comes to Verizon though...i'd be first in line to buy one.

They'd have to modify it quite a bit as Cingular is GSM and Verizon is CDMA

I like how it looks and all the features, but 8GB isn't enough for all the stuff that I would put on it. Also, it's pretty expensive, and I don't use a cell phone anyway, so there goes one of the selling points :/ The Safari browser features seem pretty cool though, as well as the touch screen.

I hope it doesn't get scratched or affected by fingerprints too easily.

Are there any planned peripherals for the iPhone?

as for just a phone, why not have something that does more? if you had a phone with cool options, you would use them. i still say that people that are all, :I just use a phone for what it was made for, calling people" are just jealous and cant afford a cooler phone. just my opinion though. that is a phone that is made with more things, so in an essence, you would be using the phone to do what it is made to do. listen to music, pics, video, camera, Internet, etcetera.

I think you have it all wrong. I also have a phone that plays music, takes pics/video, can use the internet/email; but I don't use it for that, I use it for sending/receiving calls and texts .I use my D80 for pics (and video), my iPod for music and my pc/laptop for internet.

All of which WILL work better on their respective devices than the iPhone. None of the items are cheap, either ;)

The saddest part of this overhyped, yet definitely cool, device is that Apple has you all drooling over it's cool features but hasn't revealed any of its critical features.

Example:

speaker/mic volume/fidelity
wifi/gsm/bluetooth reception
durability (screen AND shell)

I'm not trying to say that the iPhone is a crock of ----, but before all you mac fanboys/girls go retorting, 'Don't bash it until it's out!', why not wait until it's out before you start praising it?

(I wouldn't mind having one, but the lack of 3rd party applications, at least of the free sort, is a real turn off; oh, and the price)

I could afford several amazing phones if I wanted, but I don't really want to use a phone for anything more than texting/calling. I have my zen for music, I don't need to take pics all the time, but I admit being able to do a quick google search for something while on the go would be cool - but it's not worth it really.

notice i said it was my opinion too for the things i said, not a fact. i also am not a mac lover. i actually dont really like mac, but it looks like a nice product. i used to use the phone just for text messaging and talking, but now that i have a phone that does all the things like email, internet, calendar, mp3, vidoe, and much more, it is great. i personally use everything my phone has, and more since there are a lot of programs for it.

i use a tmobile mda, and i have turned it into a universal remote for my tv at home, i put all my business appointments and bill reminders in the calendar and sync to my comp, i can google things whenever i need to if i am on the road, listen to music if i am at work, put a full length movie on it to watch if i am on a trip somewhere and board, and much more. these are all things i never thought i would want or need in a phone, but it has made things more simple for me. i dont need an ipod anymore, i dont need a portable dvd player, i dont need my laptop unless i want to make a site or something like that, but i can even do that on my phone. :p so, it is just really handy to have a phone that is for more than just talking and text messaging. once again, these statements are just my opinion, and you may not agree. that is fine. just sayign that i love my phone, and i cant wait to see the iphone when it is finally released so i can see if i would like to really get one or not. as it is right now, i would love to, but might change my mind when i actually get to hold one in my hand and test it.

I think the whole cisco suing apple thing is a little crazy.
In the registers article on the "iphone (cisco)" it actually stated that its simply a very clever way to get in on the hype of something.
Everyone knew that iphone would be used by apple, and its more than a coincidence that the cisco iphone has only just been launched.
Frankly I'm more surprised its not apple suing them.

It's actually been itv, ITV, and versions of over the years so a UK trademark would apply. Under patent law they could if they wanted sue APPLE, Apple, apple, steve jobs, with or without capital letters.

But why bother......

It's kinda different because it's trademarked for other reasons.. IE it's trademarked as a television broadcasting company, whereas iTV will be trademarked as a television recording device. I'm sure Apple could have talks with ITV and come to a decision before they launch it here.

Sorry, but a trademark is a trademark and cannot be reused for any other purpose as it would infringe on the advertising possibilities (not the only reason) and possibly bring reputation down.

Actually, most terms are trademarked serveral times by several different companies - if what it's used for is completely different then it you could probably trademark it.

utcrazy
January 13th, 2007, 11:04
Axtually T.M., while I thought I was right when I was telling people that, I think you are confusing trademark with copyright. Copyrights are made on the product name and what it does. I.E. iPhone and that it's a mobile phone, or ITV and it's a broadcasting company. However trademark's are made on the actual name.

Edit: My mistake. TM's and copyright's work in the same. "It is important to note that trademark rights generally arise out of the use and/or registration (see below) of a mark in connection only with a specific type or range of products or services"

For example the iPhone as a phone, and the iPhone brick laying company are two completely different lines of work. However, cisco has a mobile phone called iPhone, so that's in direct connection and violation of trademark's.

Thanks

This is like the situation Apple had with the music Apple. They resolved it and Apple (computers) were not allowd to sell music, they aggred this with the music company Apple. And then they started iTunes and Apple(Music) got angry. And now you can't get the Beatles on iTunes. (Beatles music distributed by Apple (music))

Apple seem to be doing a lot of things they shouldn't be in the past few years...

First off, nobody's said anything about microsoft. Secondly, how popular your product is has almost no correlation with the moral & ethic beleifs of the company.

That craaazy laywer stuff is called filing a patent. It's what most companies do when they come up with an idea, or a way of doing something. Then nobody else is allowed to use that idea until the patent expires. If they do, the company who patented has the grounds to sue.

And creative were not pretty hopeless back then - they used to be called Nomad, and they were one of the first ever to have a hard disk MP3 player.

Also, nobody knows for sure who invented the term PC and asking random questions won't make you any cleverer.

price really shouldn't be much of a factor as long as it does what it is suppose to, most people keep their phones for a few years. I remember when I had to scrounge around to find the PPC-6700. I managed to get it off ebay for $740 only to sell it a few months later because it was a pain in the buttocks
