it's not the free thing that pay's it's the popularity
example of that is youtube
they could have asked money to upload or view movie clips but they kept it free and theirfore popularity growed.

advertisers will then love to advertise on your website if you have alot of (unique) visitors

putting free services on your website ensure you of making more hits
