I cant help to notice that there are way more free webhost providers out there now,

I guess this has been posted before but this is my rant.

I started offering free hosting about 2 years ago, back then i bet there was only 10% of the free host that are around now.

I know a lot of free host`s start because they started out on a free host themselves and decided to try it for themselves.

As was the case for me back in late 2004 i was with a free host provider called "freenuke hosting" which back them was very popular, I had paid myself but it did not offer php/mysql thats why i decided to try out the free host.

When free nuke hosting started to decline I thought i would try it myself and did it very succesfully 2000 forum members 60,000 post`s. that was the same time as bondings from fri-host started his (I think he had the same idea, we where both on free hosting together) and also josh from CWH started his, xeeblo started not long after us three...

All three as where quite popular, so in sense i wonder how many other free webhost`s where spawned from the older web host`s like us.

djbungle, I previously ran a free hosting company that, I will admit, flopped because of mismanagement on my part. I had no clue what I was doing. But it was wildly successful (in terms of number of users) while it lasted. :)

My belief as to why so many free hosts are moving onto the scene now is because free hosting will skyrocket as more and more third-world Internet users come online. These folks cannot afford paid hosting, even for a few dollars a month. Mark my words, the whole shared hosting industry is marching towards being completely free --- give it five years, and you'll see what I mean. :)

It is not always that people can not afford the hosting, I think that reasons are:
Can't online pay
Different Country Reasons

Or just because the free hosts are plain better than paid ones.

I believe your right, larger companies like apple or microsoft will probably offer free hosting, but not large packages.

we will see i guess.

The whole free hosting industry is bogus right now. People need to calm down, especially hosts, with what they are asking for free and offering for free. People are unable to realize that 10gb of storage and 100gb of transfer should be paid for rather than provided to them for free. Mind blowing.

My share on this... We dont offer gigs and gigs of spaces and bandwidth etc which attract kids, immature & non-smart people. (pardon me) We offer just enough resources and we let the smart ones come to us.. :)

yeah but yours is an IT community, it would attract that kind of market, for IT students and so on, its a good plan, but in someways its slightly different ? i dunno

ZC is good though, people seem to like your hosting :)

Thanks! You are right, we are more of an IT Community that provides free hosting which we have been successfully doing for more than 2 years.. Keywords to success in Free Hosting is "just give enough and do not oversell" :)

Another thought on this --- it's interesting to me the number of folks who are now placing a high value on customer service at a free Web host. This is definitely an area where many of us need to improve!

We only offer forum support which i think is enough, the problem i see that free users dont read the support pages properly, i see the same questions time and time again.

There appear to be more free hosts here (at any given time), than those looking for hosting :p

Yep,
Free hosts just can't really provided the dedicated 24/7 that I get from my host(that I pay big $$$ to).

True, but what I'm saying is that most folks want the same level of support they can get with paid hosting. Is this reasonable? I don't know. But if customers want it, I guarantee you that someone will find a way to provide it, at which point we'll all have to follow suit.
