View Full Version : Dedicated servers - reliability

Well, end of another deal, lol.
As some of you know from my prev threads, I had ordered a server from LsComputers.
Anyways, I am done with him, just wanted to share my lessons with people here.
Mayn, I don't even know if he is a legal business, or just a guy operating from MSN. No website, no telephone, no email support, no timely response .. nothing.
His website is being revamped from past 1 year, lol, I wonder what he is doing with it.

I paid him timely for 2 months. Just a brief overview of "Services."

He quoted me $175 intially. Thats what I paid him first month.
Now 2nd month he said its 200$. I said why the hell? He said 175$ was only for the first month. From 2nd month onwards it gonna be 200$. I said why didn't you tell it earlier. He simply said, maybe I forgot. lol. I didn't bother much, and paid him 200$.
Plesk with MS-SQL extension was a part of offered package. But I never got it. It costs like 25$ a month extra from swsoft (plesk). I kept on daily asking him for this from day 1, and he always replied like - "Tomorrow for sure." But that tomorrow never came. It kept on happening for 2 months. Server downtime was like atleast 1 hour everyday for 2 months on average. Everytime he said sorry and cool.
Last week I told him - if you could get everything sorted, I'll continue with you and pay for next month. He didn't do anything, and on 9th evening (the payment day for next month), disabled server. When I contacted him, he said since you didn't pay during the day, we disabled the server. No mail, no notification, whatsoever. Now he quotes a line of mine where I in frustration said him last week that "ok, I don't need mssql" and says - Sir, you yourself said you don't need MSSQL for plesk now. lol .. playing like kids, lol
Actually, he knows that I have loads of development work going on it, so I can't help but pay if he blocks all my data stored there.
I am very sure he is just a one man show, who rents servers from somewhere and offers them to people further.A simple set of lessons:
Before ordering dedicated servers, make sure the concerned company has got a working website, is a legal business, a "running company", a good support system, something like a client account area, telephone support most importantly and does not use free emails like google or yahoo ones for paypal payments.
Also make sure that their paypal accounts are "Verified" accounts.

Also, I request the people on this great community of FWS to maybe start making a list of reliable hosts (dedicated I mean here). It will be a great help to all people who are relatively new in the field of hosting. Reliability gets very important when you need servers for the internal development work of your company. I have 7 full time programmers, and suffered like losses upto 1000$ in past 2 months due to server issues. You off to give an online demo to client, and server went down ... lol.

Anyways, just for information, am going with www.softlayer.com now, that going to cost me somewhat more now.

I'll love to hear your views and suggestions on such one man hosting companies offering dedi servers to "businesses", and maybe we could get an official thread started on FWS, where we put the names of "FWS verified" hosting companies offering dedicated servers.
Now, this "FWS verified" concept can be thought of by discussion and also much depends on the moderators here.

** Edited - Missed some info **

Sorry to hear this negative experience. However I think LsComputers must have something to say about this. Let's wait and see

Well, am not much interested in discussion over LSComputers. I'll really appreciate if we could all work on a concept like "FWS Verified" Hosting providers.

Bummer that you had to go through all of those issues with your previous provider, however you will be in better hands with Softlayer.
There are a few good dedicated server providers on FWS as well.

Best of luck to you!

if you are not interested then dont post :P jk
Sorry to hear about your bad experiences, i find that a phone number on the front page is completely vital, sometimes it will put me of completely, unless i feel i can trust the provider in question,

I *think* he posted multiple offers within a week. Or something like that.

Rolly - Please remember that not all smaller dedicated server providers are like LSComputers.

Well, am not much interested in discussion over LSComputers. I'll really appreciate if we could all work on a concept like "FWS Verified" Hosting providers. Thats really not such a bad idea. But even now you can search FWS for reviews on most of the companies here. If you can not findreviews on FWS or want to find more, try WHT. Sorry you had such a rough time with your lasy provider, better luck with your next one.

@Hosting-Shack - Yep, I agree with you. But some professionalism is must. I never meant that only go with big businesses. I basically meant that go with professional people. Having telephone support and a website atleast (maybe not completely functional) gives a feeling that you are a serious business.

By "FWS Verified" I mean something more formal. Apart from all the discussions and reviews, I mean a list which is being maintained after some formal verification. Maybe we can form a team among ourselves, and verify each host coming here through his website, telephone number etc things and maintain that "official" list. Much depends on FWS mods though.
Doing such a thing will really help the community. This was the main purpose of my starting this thread.

Rolly,

There is something like your idea being planned for somewhere else. I get the feeling that Peo does not like change to take place, and as this is "Free"WebSpace, I’m assuming he does not really wish to concentrate on dedicated servers or paid hosting that much.

I feel that a "WebHostingStuff" add-on would be great for this forum, where it monitors the uptime of hosts and also allows users to upload reviews, etc. But I do not feel Peo would go for that.

Well, we can always extend this idea for free hosts too .. thats the sector with the majority share of reliability problems.

yeah, but you would have to have two different categories,

and why dont you ask Peo/volunteer to chip in/help,

the worst that can happen is he will turn you down, he seems like a pretty
reasonable guy :)

just my input

Yes, it could be suggested in the freewebspace feed back section, and we will see what peo says.
@Rolly I knew that you meant something more formal when you said "FWS Verified". I was just pointing out the tools currently available.

Its good suggestion that can be followed in this great community. Hope this will be implemented soon by Peo. In reviewing or so like rolly mentioned, there is a huge chance to make get-rid-of from frauds and cheats.

Thats the reason to go with established hosts for dedicated server and not go for cheap hosts.
