a few questions i have about how a dedicated server operates/displays

1. do most allow you to setup your own nameservers? and is that difficult

2. what exactly shows up on a whois lookup, all my info only, or my info + something about the company my dedicated server is housed through?

1.you need your own nameserver to bind to the ip address, it varies depending on your control panel

2. Whois usually display the registration information when you register the domain and the nameserver.

what do you mean by your own nameserver. would it be hard if i was using jondoe.com to set the NS up as ns1.jondoe.com and ns2.jondoe.com

and regarding the whois lookup, it doesnt list like if i used servepath, it wouldnt list any info about servepathe or that my dedicated is through servepath

1. it varies depending on which control panel you use, but for directadmin, it's very easy.

2. Whois doesn't show your server path

btw, I've sent you a pm previously, did you get it?

i wasnt talking about my server path i was talking about the company servepathe or servepath however its spelled. as a better example would the whois lookup show any information regarding say serverbeach.com if i was using them for my dedicated server?

it will not display that information out, unless you are using their nameserver.

But in this case where you probably have to use your's, people who is curious will have to check through your ip address but that's another matter.

so to sum it up, no it wouldnt.

You can use your own name servers without any problems.
You can also set your own Reverse DNS for curious people ;)

Hello,

As per your query, we have answered as follows -

a) do most allow you to setup your own nameservers? and is that difficult
Ans. Yes, in a Dedicated Server you are allowed to set your own nameservers. For a fully managed dedicated server, all you have to do is to contact your hosting provider.

b) what exactly shows up on a whois lookup, all my info only, or my info + something about the company my dedicated server is housed through?
Ans. Please enter any domain in http://whois.ws/ and check the information that will be provided to you. You can also have a look at the following link, it might be useful to you in the long run.
