View Full Version : FWS Slow?

Am I the only one for who FWS is still running painfully slow?

It's slow here at School, and sometimes even the server goes out for a minute. This happens in both FF and IE.

Not when I am at home with 100Mbps.

I've got a 3.8M connection here, and it has not always been like this. But today, and a few days ago, it's been running terribly slow. It seems to be a little bit better at the moment.

FWS is not the fastest of sites but it's ok most of the time :)

WHT on the other hand has been nightmare for the last 2 days. And their host is supposed to be RackSpace - I know I'd never use them again for sure. I remember when they were with EV1Servers there were never any issues with WHT.

Congrats FWS for being stable nearly always!

According to alexa it's very slow.

I agree with James! It's not slow, nor fast, it's 'ok'. :D

We're aware of the problems and are planning on changing a few things within a week. I beleive Todd already mentioned this in some other thread.

Did you figure that speed out by looking on your little 'Network Connection' icon in the taskbar?

Jun Luzon
April 11th, 2007, 17:26
Yep, and here's what it gives.
http://allaboutfree.com/images/speed.gif

It's a fiber optic connection direct from the provider to my computer room. :D

Not really any issues for me with FWS :)

I am on a T2 Line

I get about 1 MB/s download rate

lol, that just means the max speed that cable can handle.

Go to speedtest.net and give us the results :p.

Did as requested.
Though I think it doesn't make sense because I don't have the assurance that the server I am connecting to is a broadband connection or is not congested.

It said, that I am faster than 96% of the connections in the planet. :D

Jun Luzon

Yeah that's 13MB, not 100MB - far from it :p

It only says I have a 100MBps connection but when my computer ask for a 100MB of data all at once in one second, the opposite server says, "Oh wait! Greedy bastard. Who da ya think are gonna give you a 100MB on the spot! I have some other children to feed!"

100MBps is my default and no one can contend with it, that's why I have to end up with 13MB, the most that they can give. :P

TSO

No, it's actually related to the speed of your network card.

Jun Luzon

No, it's actually related to the speed of your network card.

It only adds to it, I guess.

TSO
April 12th, 2007, 07:40
No, the speed of your network card is 100 Mbps. It's likely just a 10/100 card, as is found in, oh, 70% of computers with a network card.

Jun Luzon
April 12th, 2007, 08:13
The card doesn't really matter since we are talking about connection speed. In fact, I've been here watching as the technicians installed the fiber optics and test the speed of it. They brought in here their gadgets and let the provider send a 100MBps of data from the provider's server to the other end of the fiber which is inside my room with their gadgets at the other end.

Yes, the network card does matter. If you have Ethernet, you use that for your cable (Not DSL/ADSL) and usually that goes about (max) up to 100~15 MBps depending on your service.

All people are limited due to FCC Standards set on these hardware devices. The Government was thinking of abolishing that and make people pay for higher speeds on top of what they pay now.

Jun Luzon

Yes, the network card does matter.

If you hadn't followed it closely, the topic is about my 100MBps connection speed and not the speed of the network card. So it doesn't.

You always get abit stuck on the end when they say 13mb etc. Like I get 4mb..but I transfer at 500max. So it would be about 10mb/2mb which is decent....very decent.

100Mbps = 12.5MBps

Wojtek
April 12th, 2007, 16:26
No, the speed of your network card is 100 Mbps.
He's correct.

Dayu, I used to get that alot when I worked at Sympatico (ISP).
People had slow speed issues (low sync) but they kept arguing that it shows 100mbps on their screen.

I then had to spend a few minutes explaining that what they're seeing is the physical connection speed of the RJ45 cable between their computer and modem/router. NOT the actual internet speed.

To prove my point, connect two computers together (no modem/router) with an RJ45 cable, and look at that speed. It'll still show 100mbps even when their's no internet connectivity.

Back on topic, FWS is very slow today :(

Jun Luzon
April 12th, 2007, 17:05
It seems none of us can understand each other since we are all talking about different subjects. Yes, I don't expect my "data transfer speed" from my computer to other computers connected via the internet to be 100MBps, that's near to impossible since it will all depends on the speed of the computer at the other end.

But when it comes to my "connection speed" which is defined by the cables that starts from the facilities of my ISP to the end terminal which is located in my room and to which I plug my network cable, it has to have the capability of 100MBps. It is the contract I signed and is now paying with my ISP so it has to be it, 100MBps displayed not any other else.

Out of curiosity Dayu, what's your price for 100mbps internet?

Peo
April 12th, 2007, 19:09
We've had slightly more traffic than usual today. The main cause of why some of you might find fws slow today is what we've mentioned earlier. We will be working on fixing this.

Out of curiosity Dayu, what's your price for 100mbps internet?

100Mbps connection alone costs 2,500 JPY monthly (Japese Yen), at 119 USD/JPY current exchange rate, it's equivalent to 21USD (US dollars). But what I am subscribed to is a 100Mbps with 8 static IP's, so I am paying 8,925JPY, equivalent to 75USD monthly.

Wojtek
April 13th, 2007, 16:38
100mbps for 21usd?

I knew japs are advanced in the technology department but such rate seems hard to believe. For example I pay 65$ cdn (57$ usd) for 10mbps cable.

Jun Luzon
April 13th, 2007, 17:41
Here's the pricing list of the ISP I'm using right now.
http://www.interlink.or.jp/service/flets/b/fee.html

The cheapest price you can get is around 1,500JPY(12.6USD). The disadvantage about that cheapest price is that you will share that 100Mbps with other users who happened to be living in the same building as you. If you want your own 100Mbps directly coming to your door, then you have to subscribe to what I'm in now.
