Hi all,
See that small green, red, grey or black button just under a poster's name, avatar and info? That represents the member's forum reputation points. You can check your rep points in your "User CP" or by click on that small button between the online status and report buttons (at any of your posts).
To get + points you need a green rep, you can only get green reps from people with a certain amount of points. The more points they have, the more points they are likely to inflict on you, minus or negative.
To get - points you need a red rep. Same applies about number points being proportional to the point score of the giving member. The - reps can only come from members who have some points already.
Grey reps have no effect - 0 points - this could be positive or negative. If you got a grey rep, all that is useful to you is the comment and how that comment makes you feel. If the person is an "unknown quantity" or below (red), all their reps appear grey.
The following is a copy-paste from a post 2 years ago, it'd be great if an admin could update these figures, as I know some of these are a bit off.
User is infamous around these parts (below -50)
User can only hope to improve (-50)
User has a little shameless behaviour in the past (-10)
User is an unknown quantity at this point (0)
User is on a distinguished road (25)
User will become famous soon enough (50)
User has a spectacular aura about (75)
User is a jewel in the rough (100)
User is just really nice (350)
User is a glorious beacon of light (450)
User is a name known to all (550)

Some information, a few suggestions and pointers about your forum reps from a member's standpoint:
I've been around here for 2 years now and had my ups and downs (including a brief red period), had fun dishing out positive and negative reps, got into wordfights so on and so on. The only think you keep learning is to respect other members of the community...
This is what I think every member should consider, I don't see how you can recieve any negative reps with the following stuck in your head:
1: Read, understand and follow the forum rules and guidelines.
2: Make positive, helpful, informative posts related to the thread.
3: Avoid being rude at all costs, includes annoying and sarcastic comments.
4: Think twice before making any personal comments.
5: If you made a mistake, say sorry. It takes a bigger man to apologize.
The rep system is set up as fairly as possible IMO, you are protected against random new users effecting your points, you have to spread around the reputation before giving it to the same person again and you can only give out a certain number of reps within the space of 24 hours.
It's not a system to be taken so seriously, don't judge a member because he has a red rep. Sometimes a red member can turn into a green "on a distinguished road", with a single + rep.
It's a system purely to encourage good behaviour all around the forums.
How to leave a rep for somebody, give them an agree or disagree rep with a comment by clicking on that small button between the online status and report buttons (at the member's post concerned).
If you agree with a post, give them an agree rep and leave a short comment why and your -username. Why? They will see that you appreciate your post and will remember next time you submit a good post.
If you disagree strongly with a post, do leave a disagree rep with a comment explaining why. Why? The will see the reason you gave and might avoid being so rude/unpleasant next time. Depending on the situation it's better sometimes to politely challenge the user with a reply before leaving the rep.
If you hate the reputation system altogether, disable it in your user control panel and the button will turn black. If you are in the red-zone, personally I would still leave it on - especially when you are red, any good and decent behaviour is most likely to earn you a rep. (Personally I think it looks worse black then red!)
Peace to you all and enjoy.
Updates/More information about Reputation:
- Turning off your reputation only hides your current points. (Thanks to Dayu for the info)
You will still earn whatever reputation the community thinks you deserve.
- You can not give a green reputation until your own reputation is more than +10. (Thanks to Dayu for the info)
