Hi all,

See that small green, red, grey or black button just under a poster's name, avatar and info? That represents the member's forum reputation points. You can check your rep points in your "User CP" or by click on that small button between the online status and report buttons (at any of your posts).

To get + points you need a green rep, you can only get green reps from people with a certain amount of points. The more points they have, the more points they are likely to inflict on you, minus or negative.

To get - points you need a red rep. Same applies about number points being proportional to the point score of the giving member. The - reps can only come from members who have some points already.

Grey reps have no effect - 0 points - this could be positive or negative. If you got a grey rep, all that is useful to you is the comment and how that comment makes you feel. If the person is an "unknown quantity" or below (red), all their reps appear grey.

The following is a copy-paste from a post 2 years ago, it'd be great if an admin could update these figures, as I know some of these are a bit off.

User is infamous around these parts (below -50)
User can only hope to improve (-50)
User has a little shameless behaviour in the past (-10)
User is an unknown quantity at this point (0)
User is on a distinguished road (25)
User will become famous soon enough (50)
User has a spectacular aura about (75)
User is a jewel in the rough (100)
User is just really nice (350)
User is a glorious beacon of light (450)
User is a name known to all (550)
User is a splendid one to behold (650)
User has much to be proud of (1000)
User has a brilliant future (1500)
User has a reputation beyond repute (2000)

Some information, a few suggestions and pointers about your forum reps from a member's standpoint:

I've been around here for 2 years now and had my ups and downs (including a brief red period), had fun dishing out positive and negative reps, got into wordfights so on and so on. The only think you keep learning is to respect other members of the community...

This is what I think every member should consider, I don't see how you can recieve any negative reps with the following stuck in your head:

1: Read, understand and follow the forum rules and guidelines.
2: Make positive, helpful, informative posts related to the thread.
3: Avoid being rude at all costs, includes annoying and sarcastic comments.
4: Think twice before making any personal comments.
5: If you made a mistake, say sorry. It takes a bigger man to apologize.

The rep system is set up as fairly as possible IMO, you are protected against random new users effecting your points, you have to spread around the reputation before giving it to the same person again and you can only give out a certain number of reps within the space of 24 hours.

It's not a system to be taken so seriously, don't judge a member because he has a red rep. Sometimes a red member can turn into a green "on a distinguished road", with a single + rep.

It's a system purely to encourage good behaviour all around the forums.

How to leave a rep for somebody, give them an agree or disagree rep with a comment by clicking on that small button between the online status and report buttons (at the member's post concerned).

If you agree with a post, give them an agree rep and leave a short comment why and your -username. Why? They will see that you appreciate your post and will remember next time you submit a good post.

If you disagree strongly with a post, do leave a disagree rep with a comment explaining why. Why? The will see the reason you gave and might avoid being so rude/unpleasant next time. Depending on the situation it's better sometimes to politely challenge the user with a reply before leaving the rep.

If you hate the reputation system altogether, disable it in your user control panel and the button will turn black. If you are in the red-zone, personally I would still leave it on - especially when you are red, any good and decent behaviour is most likely to earn you a rep. (Personally I think it looks worse black then red!)

Peace to you all and enjoy.

Updates/More information about Reputation:

- Turning off your reputation only hides your current points. (Thanks to Dayu for the info)
You will still earn whatever reputation the community thinks you deserve.

- You can not give a green reputation until your own reputation is more than +10. (Thanks to Dayu for the info)

If I may add;

2.1 Turning off your reputation only hides your current points.
You will still earn whatever reputation the community thinks you deserve.
2.2 You can not give a green reputation until your own reputation is more than +10.

If you received 10 points before when you were in the distinguished road, after someone attacked you with a slinger at your back, then you need to have 11 points next time around in order to get back on track again.

Another thing you may need to know.

I guess some of you haven't figured out that whenever you whine about your rep, you're going to get more bad rep. It's a universal truth.

Universal rule: Do not complain or gloat about rep.

Thanks for the info. At your suggestion, I will re-enable my rep - I had disabled it because I got some sort of random rep spam when I first came here that turned it red - to be honest, I don't know what color it is now! :p

Heh. :) Though I am sure someone will....so go ahead and do it - it might as well come from someone I like! :p

Too bad. The Reputation System is complaining that I have given too many reps within the last 24 hours. There has been only a couple of members I have repped recently, namely Dean, Colin, DarkGrave, Nick11 and James. Now I have no more bullets left so I need to reload. :P

For the record, I have been giving only green reps ever since.

I have given some green and some red, but more grey reps than those. :D

I try not to give any more reps nowadays since they will just appear as grey... ;)

How many points do you need to send +rep to someone any amount or does it go buy how many rep points the other person has :S

"on a distinguished road" now needs 25 points, Jan told so. You may update it now.

The information is very helpful. Thanks for that.

Yes, Jan told that in that post, 25 points for 'on a distinguished road'.

Great work James, it's nice. +rep
It will be much better if some one can add a bit of more info about how the +ve reps are added and -ve reps are deducted. As much I know the number of points added (for +ve reps) and points deducted (for -ve reps) depends on the current points of the rep-er, and this calculations differs from forum to forum.

I think I have received green reps from Richard three times and from Keagle three times, all within the past months. But the most I have returned is one green rep to each of them. When I do it again the system complains with

"You have to spread some reputation around before giving it to Richard/Keagle again."

Month and weeks have already passed since I last repped them and I believe I have already spread the Green Word all over the space. But why? How long must I wait and how much I must spread?

Anyone knows?

Yes, we extended the time between them for those who target certain members with bad rep :)

Too bad people don't use them much. I've helped out people here alot when I can but very rarely do they give me rep points. Probably don't know how to use it? ..until now ..thanks James ...I just added to your rep ..haha

James

Glad if it helped at all :D

Dayu, basically that system prevents people climbing up quickly with green reps from the same few people over and over again, and likewise prevents you going down into the minus pit with red reps from the same people over and over again.

It's good, it makes you stop dishing out red reps and makes you *think* :D

James, I would rep you for this post if my rep wouldn't appear as neutral haha... ;)

Wait, lets wait till I reach enough points then. That's when you shall receive your well-deserved green rep from me. :D
