View Full Version : 5 Year Anniversary

DarkBlood

Well, since I joined in August 2002... I'll be having my 5th year here at Freewebspace.net's Forums this August. Since it is a multiple of five, I'd thought I would do something special. However, now that I've thought about it, there's nothing really I can do around here being a lowly member. I could go make you guys a good banner, but I'm not at home.

I've made 1,760 legitimate posts (Counting this one) (That's about 1.01 posts per day)

Any ideas for what I should do for Freewebspace.net? Also, look what I rassled up (http://web.archive.org/web/19990422092715/www.freewebspace.net/cgi-bin/mb/freewebspace.pl)! Apparently in May of 2000 is when Freewebspace.net got a hold of a copy of vBulletion (v1.1.3)

Hey! No wait...

HEY! No wait...

HEY!

Anyway, you should check out the archive.org sections for some interesting FWS history. Although I didn't join until after they changed to vB2 (Before vB3.) Or wait, did I join when vB1 was around? I can't remember.

I think the members list has an option to sort by join date. If not, that'd be awful. I haven't been on it in a while, so I don't know. Also, I've gotten my post average up by .03 since I posted this thread.

Oh, I too have been here before vBulletin; before the FWS.net-own-hosted message board, even. I've been posting since FWS.net was not on "freewebspace.net" and was using cgiforme.com message boards with the green background and all.

I still visit some of the subforums in Paid Hosting, Web Services and Programming, sometimes to ask a question and sometimes to reply to people.

Just saw this thread when I was browsing randomly in General.

Well, most oldbies (maybe, but that's what they said when I was new and asking about custom titles) talked in the General forum a lot.

I'm near my 6th year here.

I think FWS was one of the first forums I joined.

I actually remember where I was and everything the first time I came here: I had a very old Compaq with windows 95 (my dad wasn't exactly well off then (and still isn't, but things have gotten better); 2nd divorces do that) and dial-up set up in my Grandma's kitchen in south Louisiana one summer. I was working on my mad HTML skillz0z0z and building a DragonBall Z web site when I realized I'd need hosting. Which brings me here.

Phrozen used to beat me.

I learnt HTML in my Social Studies classes in High School rofl. I would look at someone elses other HTML code... copied some of it, saved it and saw what it did. By doing that I effectively learned how HTML works.

Unfortunately, there are people who would object to that. However, I was going to apply to be a moderator, but I missed the deadline due to school work that suddenly became more important. Although, I still would like the moderator position... I believe that "You only get what you actually try and work for."

Because I did not send a request properly, the trying part, the chances of me becoming a moderator was cut to about zero. However, I will try to work harder in the future so I can actually apply to be one.

Although, I am still hesitant on doing so, as I may become rather... "temperamental" depending on the situation that I am assigned to as a moderator.

Nope, I'll try and find a picture of it...

It looked something like this:

With a 15-inch monitor.

300Mhz I think? maybe 250Mhz?

I started off with http://www.htmlgoodies.com from when it was still owned by Joe Burns (and that hawt wavy brown border ... before he sold it off to internet.com or something like that). Then after I had a basic knowledge, I'd go to simple web sites and dissect their code and use it to figure out what it did.

Although I despise Compaq for using inferior computing parts. I have come to realize that HP combined with Compaq, which is slowly making up for the problem. However, I have had some bad experiences with HP computing hardware as well in the past.

We had like 3 compaqs back then. They all died eventually. Conversely, I have a Gateway my parents purchased in 1999 that still runs. I think I have ArchLinux 0.6 on it with no GUI, but it's been 2 years since I booted it up. So actually I don't know if it still runs. Chances are the technology angels have taken several components to computer heaven.

How are you sure that there even is a "computer heaven"? We do not even know, even if a religious book says as such, if there is even a heaven to begin with. Although in culture, heaven can be referenced to the sky itself, rather than a place where the dead's souls go.

I am sorry if that made you feel strange, I am starting to think like this a lot rather randomly sometimes. However, I had a gateway 2000 (shell) once, and it ran smoothly. Until the button began to not work to turn the computing device on. We had to get a new system after two years with taping the back of the button to the shell.

Are you suggesting I launch non-functional computer parts into the sky?

I have a Radeon 9600 that's begging for some wings.

Hey, mine did too! What's wrong with Dreamweaver though? It's unsupported by most companies who tend to use MS Office products!
