Yup, I've also setup a website http://www.helpmadeleine.com to show our support.
My hearts go out to the family & hope Madeleine is found soon.
Seems to be widespread news, I have been seeing it on TV news. Hopefully she will be found safe.

One national newspaper, News of the World, is offering a one million pound reward for her safe return, that's over 2 million dollars.

Our UK version is offering over £2.6 Million which is around $5.2 Million USD.

Hope she is found safe and well and that the parents learn from this.
Let's hope she is returned soon.
It certainly is heart wrenching when anyone goes missing like this or kidnapped, let alone a beautiful little child like this girl.
How could anyone sleep at night knowing what they have done? :(

I DON'T CARE AT ALL!
OH MY GOD A WHITE BRITISH SMALL CUTE GIRL HAS GONE MISSING! LET'S RATTLE ON ABOUT IT FOR WEEKS!
Sure, I'd much, much prefer it if she was found and OK, but to be perfectly honest she's not exactly the first kid to have gone missing is she? Not even the first this week. Like I've said before, if we're going to feel sorry for every little thing that happens in the world then we're going to live our lives depressed. It's one thing hoping for her for a day, but how long has this thing gone on?
And I know I'm not the only person who feels this way.
Jesus. Get some real news on.

According to their site it's £1.5 Million now. Hopefully people with crucial information that see the amount available for her to return to her parents safely will come forward and help the police.
That's very kind of you Craig :) It's nice to see others want to help.

If you don't care then why post?
Because usually when you reply to a thread you're allowed to have an opinion either way. And I'm trying to stop people blindly following the media, and perhaps stop some misery.

My heart went out immediately but I'm starting to wonder a litlle - the press conference this morning was a very staged event and the details of events seem to be very 'well planned' for a chance abduction, I get a feeling there's something more than a simple abduction the way things are going.
Count the amount of children missing for whatever reason in any of our countries each year - why is this one such a media event?
I really hope it's just my natural suspicion creeping in and all will be resolved well and very soon, but I'm a bit more sceptical than some you might say.

Ok ..I don't watch the news so I don't know any of the facts on this case, but how was she abducted? ..in a hotel room, at gun point?
Please somebody fill me in.

Her Parents were around a hundred feet away in the hotel bar or summin like that while the daughter was in bed asleep in the room. When they returned the child was gone. (this is from what i've heared on the news)

Yes, we have a similiar case here - a little boy called Daniel Morcombe. He was waiting for a bus to go to the shops and buy Christmas presents for his family a few years ago. The bus, however, was full and the driver wouldn't permit Daniel on the bus. His family never saw him again. And despite other children going missing, this case has always been extremely well publicised etc. It also makes me wonder - what happened in this case they don't tell us? Or does the family just have a lot of money?
I hadn't heard about this little girl - I hope they find her safe and sound :(.

Or how about, Oh my God, an entire family's lives have been destroyed? How about the parents are going through something nobody should EVER have to go through? I agree, all children that go missing, regardless of nationality, wealth, health, etc, are all of equal importance, are all equally as sad. Yes, they should all, in a perfect world, be granted equal coverage. Sadly, they will not, thanks to the media.
But hang on, you don't want to hear about this child either? Sure it's been weeks, and they're STILL going on about it? How dare they!
Wake up to yourself - coverage in this sort of case, is in most situations, going to help. It keeps her fresh in people's minds, keeps people alert, perhaps someone will notice something they might not have if they hadn't seen it on the news at breakfast.
What would you call real news? Let's face it, the media in general leaves a LOT to be desired. The few minutes they spend on this little girl, well, the next thing they might choose to spend it on might be, oh, David Beckham. I'm sure that would be a lot more beneficial.
I'm not sure if you're really as callous as you came across, but if you are, then I find that very depressing. I hope you just exaggerated your point to in fact make it.
Edit: If I recall correctly, she only went missing on the 3rd of May. I don't think 12 days of media coverage is much to ask you to bear, when these people's lives have been ruined.
Let's face it, lots of kids go missing, but their families don't all have the money or the power behind them, or the 'sensational' story to make the media sit up and pay attention. That's sad. Why should some children be given more of a chance due to the wealth of their families? Or how hideously they were abducted?

Very sad, and I truely hope they find her okay, but it makes you think about why she is getting the media coverage compared to others abducted, like anhedonia said.
Keep us posted on if shes found though, I don't keep up with international news too well. Hope they find her.

Kidnapping Statistics
Every 40 seconds in the United States, a child is reported missing or abducted. That translates to over 2,000 children per day (under 18 years of age) or 800,000 per year.
The rate of reported missing children in the United States is 11.4 per 1,000 (Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway, and Thrownaway Children, October 2002; National Crime Information Center)
Of the 800,000 children reported missing annually, approximately 69,000 are abducted.

But then it would have something to do with me, so of course I'd care.
My point is, basically, if we all cared about every horrendous thing in the world then we'd be very unhappy people, all the time. If it happened to somebody I know, then I would care, but at the same time I wouldn't expect somebody on the other side of the world to (unless they knew me).
Just to sum up, if you came and shot me in the face and killed my parents, I would care and expect people who know me to care, but I wouldn't expect it to be on international news for weeks on end.
And I don't watch the news, I listen to it - on the radio. It's only for 10 or so minutes so I don't bother changing the channel.
Of COURSE I'd prefer it if she turns up alive and well, as I've said before - but either way, it doesn't effect me just like most of the other things that happen in the rest of europe etc.
And 12 days is a long time to be talking about one lost child on the news.

Lemme tell you something, I have a 2 year old girl, the pictures I recieve from my minds eye are far more herendous than anything I can post on a forum when I imagine wat might have happened to that poor child, so I'll be as graphic as I think I should be, if you don't like it then don't read it, or close the thread.
Colin, you're totally wrong, you don't have to care about it, you just don't have to be so disrepectful, if everyone took your "I don't give a ---- about anyone unless it somehow directly affects my life" then NO ONE would be safe would they.
No ones asking you to be a samaritan and go an raise money or ----, just show a little social decorum.

Well that's different as it directly affects you for a good reason. And I'm sorry if I've offended anybody. But I'm not changing my opinion.

Yeah, and no-one would be happy either. How many children do you think have been lost or abducted since Madeleine? Why are we concentrating on her case?
I guess as too many people are getting upset by my posts I'll leave this thread.

Alley, Colin, Joe - I personally don't think it matters one jot what is said here. I said my bit earlier and stick by it.
Some will take a calous outlook as it can be too painfull to think further into the situation (possibly a form of mental self defence), Alley it's not flame it's opinions on a very volatile subject at the mo which will in turn get slightly warm at least, Colin see first comment your opinion is yours and that should be appreciated not dive-bombed, Joe I can side with you (and if I got graphic it would be a lot worse- for reasons I won't say here) as I have reasons to have very strong feelings regarding anything along these lines or anything similar.
Maybe wind all our necks in a bit and let's just wait and see what happens and hope for the best - don't think anyone wouldn't be hoping for her safe return.

It's getting so much media attention because of the way that the Portugese police handled the situation, in that it seemed to the media at the beginning that they weren't handling it, everthing was very hush hush, so they made a noise ....
It doesn't matter anyway, that's no reason to be a ----.

Scared people dont snatch children in broad daylight, that's pretty stupid, and it works both ways too ....
I think by the time the papers had put up a reward it was probably already too late anyway, possibly even the reason they put up a reward, don't suppose we'll ever know, but I don't think that sort of crime can get "too much attention", if even one child is left in thier garden because the pervert who was thinking about snatching them was scared off by all this media attention then that's a good thing .....

Not scared of the threat but for other reasons or even the possibility, someone that had lost a child of they're own and was taken by emotion.
Then they would have been frightened and confused - now they're dangerous. That's what I meant Joe.
