I think you shouldn't start another webhosting company. The market is way toooooo saturated. Boo to new webhosts!!!

I have to agree, The IT market (hosting, dedicated servers, co-location) is getting way to large. There isn't any money left in it.

Your two late on getting into the field. :(...

Watch for some new trends see if you can find one to jump aboard on.

sadly to tell you the truth that market is also getting saturated. You need to come up with something original and innovative

Try the porn industry.

</kidding>

No, really, though. Try the porn industry.

Or write a really cool, open-source program.
Then make a web site for it.
And a Pay-Pal donations system.

Better yet, write a program that people need.
Just open-source it and ensure your code compiles cross-platform.
Then make a web site for it.
And a Pay-Pal donations system.

I agree there are already too many web hosts, it won't be easy if you decide to start a new web host.

rosmatis, the name is hardly important. The important factor is your USP (Unique Selling Proposition): what makes you different from, and better than, other hosts? You're worrying about the wrong things here.

hmm.... I think I will start a webhosting company though... thats why Im buying a reseller... I would want a company that just would pay up for itself so i can host my own site for free. etc...

and i might succede as there are still many people that don't have a host and especially in the uk...

rosmatis,

The web hosting industry is very tough and very time and revenue consuming. Trust me on this factor. I know!
Sleepless nights, weeks of no revenue inwards, weeks or even months of spending.
Hours uplon hours in front of the PC.

All daunting tasks I know. But it gets worse. You could put 3 or 4 years work into a project like I did and watch it go under in one night. It has happened to me and it is only now I am beginning to get back on my feet but have to start from scratch again with the endless nights with no sleep, hours of PC, Large Spendings etc.

But as said already. Come up with a plan that will bring you apart from the rest. Make you stand out above the crowd.
Start with a Reseller as well, which was mentioned also. Great advice given above.
But most of all mate, enjoy it.

Really doesn't sound very enjoyable! :P Good luck Rosmatis.

A thread for "Host Talk"

Why do you want to be a host and what kind of host do you want to be? Branding comes later.

Good points mentioned by the members and Dan.
Just would like to add, you need to make sure that your expenses does go high, always in this business you keep spending money without feeling about it, and then you would find out later that expenses are exceeding the revenue earned.

Advertise well and be prepared to some sleep-less times.

You can do that on a reseller. :-) I can recommend a few good resellers to get you started if you don't have a reseller account yet?

I'll agree with the sleepless nights part, I have way too many of them... I enjoy what I do but it isn't as easy as it sometimes seems.

Good luck with your new hosting company if you do start one. :)

I think at this stage, there would be easier ways to make money than hosting, unless you can come up with something so unique that branding alone could sell it.

Take a look at how many have requested hosting in the last month, then take a look at how many have offered hosting in the last week.

tbh even mowing lawns will get you more profit than working in the hosting industry! :)

Quoted for truth.

Either you need to invest like hell and oversell like crazy, or have some quirky reason people like you. Otherwise, you are just one host in an ocean of others.

In my opinion hosting can be very profitable but don't rely on it as your only income. I do as a hobby. I don't make a profit so far but its not the worst thing to do. I do dedicate myself to my web hosting services. I think I just enjoy myself period. You just have to love what you do and do some research. It takes time. Before you buy a billing system and get a help desk, look around. I do recommend getting a design too but of course an original design would be best. If you can do really good at making services and coming up with concepts people will come.

Your problem wont be getting people to take you up on hosting offers mate, I might get 40+ signups for hosting a day. It takes quite a bit of time to trawl through them all, and then to create the accounts - this is where having a few extra hands come in great. Nothing huge, maybe a minute or two per account to set up. But do that every day and it can get a bit tiring. So having some help on board can do wonders for your sanity.

The real joy comes in checking the accounts a month later - and finding all the inactive accounts, accounts which are simply redirecting to a chinese forum, using the hosting for simple filesharing, etc etc. And then having to remove them all.

Theres still some money to be made in free hosting, just dont overshoot yourself. Buying a huge server will help no-one. Start small - aim for maybe 10-20 hostee's. Money says maybe 2 of them will actually use their webspace ;)

And most importantly, have some fun! Its your webspace - if you've got a side project you want to work on, you've got the server space to spare, and youre going to have plenty of time in the early months. Who knows, your sideproject might just be your big moneymaker :)
