Assuming 30 days in a month:
24hrs x 30 = 720 hours in a month
720 x .985 = 709.2 hours of uptime
That leaves you with 10.8 hours of downtime per month. Whether or not that is acceptable is up to you and would depend on how important it is that your site be accessable at all times.
Will your company lose money if your site is down? If so, spend the extra cash and go for a site that offers 99.9% uptime.
Good Luck!

There are now hosts which can offer 100% uptime. This is done by using 2 nameservers.

98.5 is not that great for pay.
Make sure they have a 99.9% uptime and a 90 day money back guarantee.

98.5% uptime guarantee doesn't imply 1.5% downtime guarantee :D
