Hi Guys,

I'm helping out a friend, and they tell me they intend to set up a Bussiness that will rely very heavily on its online portal/sector.

These Guys probably wouldn't want to have to manage the server almost at all, although i have offered to help them.

They are definitely looking in the dedicated server direction.

Price isnt a huge concern, but thousands per month is too high.

Now on to the key points:

Downtime is just not an option. They know enough (and i have told them) that you just don't get 100% uptime, and a few minutes a month here and there for crucial updates is understandable. However, days, or even hours of downtime could cause problems, so is undesirable.

This server may (probably will) contain sensitive data. IT MUST NOT BE HACKED , if it needs to be hardened and secured. You name it, if it will stop someone getting the info, then its a good option.

-------------------------------------------

If you guys, knowledgable as you are, could let me know of any companies that could TRULY Garauntee the above, I would be very grateful.

These companies (like rackspace or whatever) would need to be established.

Thank you very much for reading.

You could get a server from serveral companies, and then have a seperate place do management.

Also let me know what your looking for server wise. I may be able to get you into a Colocation system with server for $2000 USD for the first year. Again contact me via msn or aim.. Were see what we can do :)

IT MUST NOT BE HACKED
Amc

It is 100% impossible to make a server hacker proof, that's a fact. This is even more impossible when vulnerable freeware scripts are so commonly used (forums, bb's, guestbooks, formmails). Nevertheless, even multibillion dollar company's such as banks, government computers, credit card companies, have had server's compromised :-).

that should be reasonable enough to do, however a company like PSM would not be the greatest choice. If you are looking for PROACTIVE management that is something different. PSM is more of a react when something happens deal.

what kind of application will this be so I might be able to tell you what kind of hardware you would want to deal with.

I think that better to use one company with managegment for all your servers.

@craig: I respect that it is not possible for a server to make a server HackPROOF, as this would defeat the point d'etre of hackers. However, this server would contain sensitive data (if you want to know what kind contact me via pm) and would be extremely damaging to bussiness, and possibly damaging legally, if it was obtained without full permission of the company. Hence in this case security woul be a priority.

@Decker: I might just do that, if you wouldnt mind giving advice.

@Eclouds: I wish these guys were my clients :P Just close friends who im helping/working for on an unofficial basis.

@LSC: You are right, i believe ( though i would have to discuss this with them) that they would be looking for proactive management, and they wouldnt really want to have to manage anything outside the administrative section of the php scripted site.

Ill add you on msn, sounds interesting...

-------

They wouldn't be using any kind of freeware, infact the whole site will most probably be custom coded, with a fully optimised and simple administrative side.

To put it simply, people would (i think) have user accounts and would be able to browse other peoples accounts, and then also have certain central lists where people may browse/enquire about/order products. probably with a search engine, and a category system, with a page on each product i imagine (this is just speculation)

This would be a members only website, with non members being directed to an information page with regards as to how to become a member amd contact the firm etc.... ( i believe, again, it isn't my project ).

-------------

Thanks again for your responses, one last thing to add, is that this server MIGHT be better in the UK. I don't think this is by any means essential, and would be ignored if it meant we could get a better service. The guy just mentioned it in passing, so i thought i would pass it on, and see if, by any chance, that made any difference.

Like i said, i doubt it will actually matter that much.

Thanks
Amc
