I was just curious but Could you essentially buy a server not rent like x amount a month but buy it in full and then pay for co-location and the ethernet line?

Pros as a hosting company I would think you would know this answer ;).
Yes you are able to purchase a server then purchase co-location space at a data center which covers power and rack space. Next you purchase the transfer for that server.
Note that no you cant run a server out of your house on an Ethernet line in-case that was what you meant. You need a high quality transfer line and redundancy from a data center.
In the case you need a colocation or server, I do sell both :).

Sure you can, After looking at the prices of co-lo transfer cost you will see its much easier and cheaper to rent.

Tumble this is not always true, in the long run its cheaper to colocate, typically the first year you will fork out $2000 for a server and colocation following this only $1000 for colocation and that means you start saving a large amount over time :)

Just pricing out bandwitdth needs i found a average of 50-60% more cost for Tier1 premimun bandwidth. Granted of course you can get cogent bandwidth for a pretty good cost.
But really that was just a quick check and did not go deep into research.

Because I was going to buy a server not rent it and then just pay for the other stuff.
I'm looking to start out with a p4 2.8ghz HT 2Gb of ram. How much do you think that will cost? maybe 10(0)mbps? Definitley cpanel/whm

Still, If you don't have that kind of money, monthly fees are probably the best way to go.
