OK,

Basically theres this company named Dedibox (http://www.dedibox.fr) and they are based in France and use the Proxad network.

Up to sometime last year, their service was available only to the French. But they did something and allowed French companies to resell their service to entities of other countries. This created quiet an impact on the hosting industry since Dedibox offered unmetered 100mbit uplinks (or so it was advertised) for very low prices.

I have been a customer of BestOfData (a reseller of Dedibox) for sometime but cancelled the service since their network was starting to become very unstable (constant drop outs to AU), however recently I received an email stating that they're going to stop their service since Dedibox has decided to pull the plugs without any notice due to some TOS update. You can find some info about it at https://www.bestofdata.com/ (their SSL cert is expired).

In case their site goes down here's a copy of the info:

Hello,
DEDIBOX HAS THE SERVERS BACK ON TILL 4PM on 2nd JULY 2007 GMT+1 TIME. PLEASE RUN YOUR BACKUP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

You might be contacting us for server problems that are happening since 12pm GMT+1 time.

Our provider has canceled all our servers because they say that we are breaking their new sell agreement.

We totally understand the critical situation you might be in because of this major issue.

We are trying to discuss the problem with Dedibox SAS. Apparently they aren't ok to find a solution with us.

By now we aren't able to provide any servers and get them back on.

We would like to tell you that we are terribly sorry about the situation and will try to find a solution.

If we cannot find an arrangement with Dedibox SAS by today, we'll refund all payments running till your renewal date at a prorated amount to your BESTOFDATA account and then will have your refund done directly via Paypal as soon as possible with the money we can have to refund you.

Again we are sorry for this big major problem.

Our company will do everything possible to repair this as soon as possible.

We will keep you posted with the latest news.

Best Regards,
BESTOFDATA LLC

There's also a WHT thread about it: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=617092

Anyhow, bottom line. What do you think of this? Share your thoughts.

As with all the scams out there, it has to end at some point, and as per normal, it's ended with very short notice.

When you go with a scam company, and get scammed or the company stops its service, you have no right to complain, you should have been fully aware of the risks.

It was going to happen at some point, so why is everyone so shocked?

It's a shame that BestOfData has suffered as well as all their clients, but again they took a decision to use that supplier most probably due to cost, the fact there are no servers (or reseller accounts, etc.) to transfer accounts to in the interm or even to hold backups until clients are able to retrieve their data
TILL 4PM on 2nd JULY 2007 GMT+1 has already gone so is a bit short sighted and I assume the deadline has passed and access is gone too - although if so why is thier site online?

It would be more interesting to find out when BestOfData found this out and did the contat thier clients straight away.

Hosts here have offered for some time to provide temp space and resources to help out other hosts in a bit of trouble with storage and transfers, etc. I hope any forums BestOfData visits has people prepared to help out in this way too to save client data.

But all said it's the host of the client responsible, not the origionator of supply, that has to take the load for this. A bad caaveat is that the T&C's say that your stuffed no matter what!

Don't think it was necessarily a scam Richard but possibly 'ill advised'!

Just the usual - go cheap get a heap....

sep did say they had already cancelled to, so I don't think it was a complaint just a query for comment.

I was not referring to Sep, I was talking about some of the people on WHT ;)

And they offered a dedicated 100mbps unmetered connection, in their early adverts, they offered 33TB monthly bandwidth (100mbps dedicated) In actual fact, it was shared, therefore, a scam.

I actually hate to see this happen to them, i had a few boxes from them last year, and i never had a problem with the services nor with support etc. It was a great deal for the price that i was paying..

@ Richard,

I never seen them advertise that it was dedicated, when i picked up mine i was well aware that the connection was shared. Not everything is a scam you seem to use that term all to freely, its not as if they took clients money and thousands of dollars and ran with it. As Decker said i would think more ill advised. I mean hell they are even refunding customers that added funds t o their account etc. So i would hardly see them as a scam..

 Sorry for the bit about sep then but you were slightly vague, but I do agree with the second bit very strongly, WHT is a bit more out there than most - experience speaking from the mercenary nature of it.

Love the title though sep - a soup opera, rather than soap opera, and I think it might be more valid :)

XSIS,

Trust me :P I do not use it as freely as I would want to. But to me (And a certain few moderators around these parts ;)) shared unmetered is a scam, it's just the way I feel.

I knew it would blow lol, there's a thread on WHT about dediboxinternational who offer a 40 day setup lol, I guess they will be going through the same issue since they also reseller dedibox.fr.

Its a shame but as the old saying goes ''You get what you pay for''.
