the fantastico doesn't want to install due to a not proper license put in. but the server is great. its my first time with a dedicated server so i'm abit nervous in setting it up.

does the server need my domain i just purchased ? or can i leave it was the IP ?

i'm not going to be selling webspace but i'll be hosting a friend. i need some advice on things :(

Was it a basic from the planet?

If so you may have nothing installed.

Login to the root WHM, do the basic WHM set up, create your name servers with your registrar and you will be ready to go. Of course there is additional hardening and tweaks you can, and should, perform. But that will take care of the basics and you will be able to host a domains.

To me, it's simpler to set up the server with a domain because I have trouble trying to remember the IP when I first get it.

thnx all. i'm greatful for it all :)

its been rocky with the planet and still have troubles. i get ip notices in my email i think on a secondary daily basis stating my host name isn't found, plus my Mysql doesn't work. my mail works on the server but doesn't work when i configure outlook Express nor thunderbird.

i'm thinking about hiring a company to take a look at it inside and see what the ---- the problems are and resolve them and look for others that may occur. is it still worth the money i paid that i get problem over problem. ?

PSM.

$30 - For the initial setup, is worth it. Bin the after the first month or don't if you like their support.

Well, we did know :P let me guess, they accidentally reformatted your hard drive? Seems to be a lot of that going around.

I've had one from them before and I must say their not the best (last one I ever ordered from them), quite possibly the same situation you purchase a 'web-server' and it's just setup as a linux workstation with shell access, hardly a web-server. :eek3:

Easy enough to pull an rpm install but if your starting out it's a flaming liberty.

The planet = not good , i had a server from them , which went down.

there response was that they had terminated the wrong server id and had made a mistake :S , never toutch them again

They have a habit of *loosing* payments and reformatting the wrong servers.

ahhh, it seems to be they gave you what you wanted, but you
clearly did not know what you were doing...so therefore you get
mad, cancel your account, then blame them. last I heard cpanel and whm are not free, and you clearly did not even know that...You had no business even buying this or you should have gotten it managed.

The op never said that he did know cPanel and WHM wasnt free he said that he didnt know fantastico had a cost on it..alot of providers are starting to offer cPanel / WHM fantastico in a bundle package. Furthermore when you setup a cPanel box everything should work by defauly mysql, php etc. So yes he should have gotten management if he didnt know how to use it but the planet still has some liablility for it not functioning properly..

With the Planets reputation on f*ck ups, I would imagine that was not what happened.

I know that there is no perfect company, but the guy was complaining about fantastico license problem, but he didnt even bought a license.

He did not know what to do since it was his first dedicated server, and thats fine, I mean, I remember when I had my first dedicated server, I had tons of doubts, problems, I ----ed things up; but definetely not caused by ThePlanet, just a quick search in google gave me all answers. So even that ThePlanet sometimes fu(k things up (based on what people say on this thread, I have some servers with them and never had an issue for 2 years). The guy dont gives too much information on why he cancelled the server, so it would be interesting to hear what happened, the facts. not his opinion
