Hi all,
Just check my f2s site - and voila its gone! ( I know , I 've been
asleep.

Please - your suggestions for a free host ( thats taking
sign ups now - duh! ) ?

My only real requirements are:

1. No ads

2. Fairly fast ( I have flash files and people back out if
its too slow )

3. reasonably good uptime.

( and if I cant have above - what' next best options? )

thanks so much!

Kathy

Oh one more -

Or this could be a different host, also.

Are there any free hosts that still allow hotlinking?

( small jpeg files under 100 k all that I need)

thanks!

Kathy

Ad-free hosts that've been around a while and at least seem stable and fast to me:

http://www.freeasphost.co.uk

You might have to use a 2nd host for hotlinking, I don't think those ones allow it. Look in column 8 at http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/misc/freewebhosting.htm for hosts that allow hotlinking, or at least did at the time the people made that page (some of 'em are probably dead now).

If you can afford $4.20 per year, go with cyberwings : http://www.cyberwings.com

$25 for 8gigs of BW is roughly $3/gig, when BW is costing them around $1.50/gig for quality BW, or under 75cents/gig for cheap BW.. :D

Yeah, but aren't you forgetting that they're also giving up valuable space on their server, amelen? :)

NiceWebs (http://www.nicewebs.com) only have to put a small button at your start page.

76Hosting (http://www.76hosting.com) they have a waiting list but you will take the hosting early :)

With a 40gig HD costing a hundred dollars, by making BW price even 3 cents over there BW costs, they will make a profit, and pay of the HD cost in a few days..

I am not critizing that host in general.. its just how most operate.. The smaller hosts don't get enough sales of paid hosting.. so they raise prices to make up for that. And the bigger hosts need expensives offices and useless employees. So in the end almost all hosts sell BW for 3-4x more than they pay for it..

A perfect example is people using rackshack.. most of the people using rackshack re-sell paid hosting packages.. Some sell medium size packages for over $100/month, while the whole dedicated server they get from rackshack costs only $99/month..

But i guess thats understandable.. since its capitalism.. In the words of karl marx... capitalism is driven by the self interest of man, and is checked by competition.

All we need is one big company to come along and offer cheap hosting.. and if it takes away enough customers from the other big onces, the price cuts will follow.. :biggrin2:

Oh, please don't copy that guy. I had to read the Communist Manifesto in five three hours, and I am sick of it.

amelen, your numbers are off, because you're comparing monthly bandwidth to a yearly fee. It's $25/year, and the data transfer is
96 GB/year (8 per month). That's about $0.26 per gigabyte of data transfer.

If every member used their entire alloted amount, cyberwings would be be broke.

Oh.. sorry.. i thought it was per month..

Do you know were they keep there servers? I get the strange fealing that they use rackshack..

amelen

yep.. from there site...

"Verio OC3 Link - 155Mbps Max.
Savvis OC3 Link - 155 Mbps Max.
TimeWarner OC3 Link 155Mbps Max.
ELI DS3 - 45Mbps Max.
GB Link to the Internet - 1000Mbps Max."

Than go and see what rackshack uses
http://www.rackshack.net/aboutus/networks.asp

And them offering plesk gave it away 2..

So even at there low prices i believe they are still making a profit..
