I was reading an article recently about how the world of storage is fast changing. So, here's a small poll: Which is your preferred medium of transferring/storing data?

Pen/Flash Drives. If I could afford a bunch of RW Disks, I could go with that instead.

flash drives, to be precise the flash memory on my phone gets used a lot for carrying drivers and whatever between almost working pc's ....

Pen Drives, they're the best in almost any option.

I'm the one always trying to find a computer that uses a floppy drive. Yes, I use them quite a bit still. I have a flash drive though, so that's in the rotation too. It's hit and miss when it comes to if it's going to work on another computer though.

I would have voted for both if I could, but my tower and laptop both don't have floppy drives, and I can't afford an external one at the moment. By the way, do you remember ZIP and those Easy whatchamacallits for Macintosh?

Pen drives I guess. But it depends on what it is I'm transferring. Often the internet is great, or over a wireless network if available.

Floppy disks are officially dead; the dixons chain (inc currys & pcworld) and many other stores stopped stocking them a while ago.

1.44MB for something you can't even fit in your wallet? Please..

I do remember and used ZIP drives a bit, not sure about the mac one. Floppies are small and thin and secure. They are guaranteed to work on any computer that has the drive. All the companies I build companies from all carry floppy drives still.

My use of flash drives has by far out-numbered my use of recordable media, that's for sure :)

I use my iPod to transfer data around now unless it's easier to use a wireless network.

Portable hard drive. I love my LaCie 100GB All-Terrain HD (http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10721).

Flash drives aren't that old y'know. I remember when my mother would rent a SyQuest EZ135 Drive from the University at the Helen C. White Computer Lab.

I have a rather unique process that works well for me:

1: Archive all the files I want to transfer
2: View the archive in TextPad as if it were plain text (it's a jumble of ASCII)
3: Print out all the ascii crap (468 pages is my record)
4: Scan it all into the other computer and OCR it
5: Paste it all into textpad on the other computer and save as achive
6: Unzip, Presto!

Failing that I just use a 1gb Flashdrive

TAR.GZ it next time. Sometimes TAR.GZ will turn one 5 MB file into 5xx KB.

Wow, that wastes paper and an ungodly amount of time. Good work!

If you actually do that, well done.

I use my 2GB MicroCenter flash drive all the time. The only reason I ever really use CD-Rs is for music for my car. Sometimes I'll get the urge to wipe my linux box and try a new distro, but that hasn't happened in a while. But I use CD-Rs for that too.

I'm shopping around for a good external hard drive, to back up all my data, and because the 55GB drive on my laptop is full of porn, I mean music and movies. Is the Western Digital MyBook any good? The local Best Buy has a 250GB model for like $119 or something equally ridiculous, so I was considering picking one up.

Tree: If I ever decide to go caving or base jumping (http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/072703/how-extreme-a-sport.gif) and need a hard drive with me, I'll remember LaCie.
