make: *** [libphp5.la] Error 1

That's the error I get when trying to upgrade from 4.0.6 to 5.0.1 in WHM - Apache Update.

Does anyone know what causes this?

It brings all php applications, such as forums down.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dan, you should go a bit higher than that, there are some pretty significant changes after 5.0.3, I'd suggest 5.2.1 at the least, even 5.2.1 has some problems with proc_open and family, so 5.2.2|3 if you use those .......

Yeah I am on 5.2.1
Seems to be running well. Of course if any clients encounter issues we will take care of it. :)

Some scripts aren't that stable and don't work, there's two sides to the argument though. Not really, not many have the problems which I just said.
