View Full Version : a pretty good, but free compression utility for large files

Another program written by me to perform compression and decompression on the windows platform.
The compression utility is about half a megabyte and can squash the 460mb MSVC++ Express ISO to 176mb, so the half a meg doesn't seem to matter too much ..... drag and drop a file onto phz.exe to compress it and drag a ".phz" file onto it to decompress it .....
This application is written in php only, and distributed as an exe, you DO NOT need php installed on the host machine to run it, it will work on any windows platform above windows 98, including vista ( screenshot is vista ).

I really hope it does :) .... the idea started as an sfx creator, I can do that with a real small overhead, only I'm not there yet and I'm out of time .... I wouldn't call it anywhere near finished yet .....

Yeah, all it does is sit there when I drag a file onto the command prompt.

Pushing enter pops up "phz.exe encountered an error and needs to be closed". Details screen:

Sometimes it just exits with no Windows errors.

Tried it but dosnt work.
XP mce sp2
It just appends the file path at the end of "press enter to exit" and sits there.
Pressing enter, or quiting, just exists the window with no errors.

That's curious, can you use a command line and pass a filename as the first argument, something like
cd C:\wherever\you\downloaded
phz.exe C:\myfile.ext
What happens now ??
Got no xp here .....

you should try running vmWare with XP on it so you can replicate the problem. might have more success that way. i am no expert on compression unfortunately, but, since you seem to know something about it, the virtual machine may be handy for you to run.

Works great that way.

I don't get it, I installed a vm and dragging and dropping does work, theres not really any reason it wouldn't, when you drag something onto another file all windows does is pass the filename as an argument, when you select more than one each is passed as an argument ........ can you try dropping something that isn't an sql or plain text file ?? or something that you don't have a file association for ??
It's been downloaded from krakjoe.com 40 times since yesterday, and no one has reported any bugs or said they are having this problem, its very strange ....

Works fine on XP SP2, just drag a file 'onto' the executable and it works a treat :)

I did mention that's how its supposed to work, you can also pass the file as the first argument from the command line ..... glad it works anyhow - at least it wasn't a complete waste of time ..... + it gives me something easy to mess with when I have a spare 10 minutes .....

The problem isn't when dragging and dropping, it's when opening it from the Windows desktop environment. When from the command line, it works perfectly. But when opening it straight as a stand-alone executable, when it first pops up it shows

I specifically said that you should drag and drop onto it because the code was written in less than an hour and at present that is all it is supporting, just one file, no command line parameters ( yet ), I should have been clearer I suppose, I'm writing some command line options for it so eventually none of this will matter ...... thanks for the feedback, I was only kidding with the shouting bunny .....

I tried to compress over 400 files at a go, Windows gave me an error :( (eh well..2gb of stuff..)
edit: Okay, I tried and compress the folder instead but it seems like it hates it too:
------------------------------------------------------------
Cannot open C:\Users\Yun\Music for reading
------------------------------------------------------------
edit2: I'm an idiot, just noticed it supports one file only..

Yeah I'll make it do directories too in the next couple of minor versions, really I made it to compress the thousands of ISO images I have on my pc that's why it only accepts the one large file .....

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. Looks like your site is down, krakjoe. Anywhere else I could grab a copy of this script?

Krakjoe made a lot of nice little apps but they're all offline. Hopefully he'll get them all rehosted again. :)
