I just saw an advert for this and thought it looked pretty cool. Basically - it's a device that lets you surf the internet. You pay the one off price for it, and recieve 12months free internet surfing, limited to 20hours a month. Or you can pay £5.99/month for unlimited surfing. Thinking of getting one when they come out.

Thoughts?

Hi,
Nice find - I'd still get an upgrade to a smart phone as cool as that product seems. If I didn't need an upgrade that would be a cool gadget to have or a really nice gift idea!
Best wishes

Thanks. Yup, I'm hoping to get it, as I was going to get a laptop for this sort of thing. Hopefully the in-built IM supports MSN.

Mmm, but I guess you wont be away that long, and if your on the plane or the net or at work you can just plug it in.

Nice! And cheaper. Might get it from there then when it comes out.

I can't believe that it loads a page that quickly over GRPS..
If I were you I'd wait a month for reviews before thinking about buying it.

I guess you could stick with a smartphone as long as you have small fingers. And don't mind the tiny screeen. And the lack of layout... I think it's cool, I want one!

Yup, I was thinking that. It seems a bit...too good to be true. I mean - what happens if DataWind goes down, you lose your access?

Finally it seems like they're bringing back the clamshell HPCs! I love those things.

I long for the day that I can just whip out my pda, internet tablet or laptop, and just surf the net at an affordable price (less than $30/mo.).

why would this company provide free internet?
if that really is the case, i am sure they will be out of business pretty fast. so much for the $180 paper weight.

Because they've got it in bulk. It's free for the first year, and as they compress it, the amount of bandwith you use isn't actually that much. This is just how I understand it, and what I've read.

Will it be available to the US?

UK only I think, though I think you could buy one and pay roaming fees. That might work. Expensive though.

Yeah but that doesn't reduce the amount of bandwidth their servers use, their proxy has to download the whole page before it's compressed obviously, so I do smell trouble ahead, you don't use any less bandwidth, only less is sent to your device ..... o2 used to do free GPRS internet too, same thing through a proxy but not compressed, they managed it for three years .......
EDIT : It's really not clever, after a few thousand people have one of these devices you can kiss goodbye to the fast load times it boasts of, compressing every bit of content including images is gonna put an amazing amount of pressure on any infrastructure, even though it's just webpages .... I really don't see them being able to sustain such a service .... maybe after a year their prices will go right up inline with the amount of money they will loose ....

Ah, never heard of this before. They hid it well.
Lol
Edit2:
I'm having trouble installing or using TiSP.
Your internet connection should be working within one hour of GFlushing the sinker. If you still aren't online after that period of time, your toilet may be clogged. Please flush three more times, then check your online connection again. If you're still experiencing problems, drop eight mints into the bowl and add a two-liter bottle of diet soda. For further assistance, please visit the TiSP Help Group.
