I was wondering when a host should go from a reseller to vps. Should they wait until profits are in the plus side or just go all out and buy one?

Personally I would wait until I was sure it was working and then upgrade. However, if your reseller is getting to a point of being close to full, it might be a good idea also to upgrade.

Keep it simple, wait until you are making profit.

If your reseller is already nearing your limits, and you are still not turning a profit then perhaps you need to rethink your pricing scheme in order to turn a profit and move to VPS.

If it were me, i'd wait until I was making enough to move straight to a dedicated server. When your reseller account gets full, purchase another one from a different provider, then when you make enough money to afford a dedicated server, move to it, that way you don't have to fumble with a vps for a short amount of time.

Yeah id vouch for getting a second reseller then move right on to dedicated, it could end up saving you quite a bit

I would go the route Reseller >> VPS >> Dedicated.

You really need to learn to administer a server with a VPS prior to moving to dedicated unless you're going to pay for managed services.

I would skip the Reseller step... Honestly if you're starting a serious business you should have at least money to invest in a proper infrastructure. :)

These points should to be noticed:
1. You have enough budget to pay for a managed vps.
2. Your current reseller web host warns you about usage etc.

Unless you have some special reason to want or need full access to a server, and you're confident that you can administer one, then do as Roland suggested ..... whilst you're building a clientbase, let your host do some of the work and administer the server you use so you can concentrate on support ....

Good valuable points there.
