I like the way acidmist does their ad thing... you get better service if you sign up for their ad option, and just regular stuff with their no-ads option. The ad option is tempting...

Great! And you only require one small banner (?) of yours. And is there like a required hits per day kinda stuff?

whateverhosting.com isn't allowing new users.

fumecity has ads.

Just this: http://www.syanet.com/adbar.htm on each page. No required hits or anything. Trying to keep it as simple as possible.

Hi,
We're sorry, due to overwhelming demand we are no longer accepting new signups. We will resume in February.

Syanet looks like a tempting host ;) I might sign up to host one of my personal BUT "Professional" websites :D

Nick
January 27th, 2001, 14:17
Syanet's ad is the stupidest looking adbar I've ever seen :(.

syanet
January 27th, 2001, 14:30
Nick...Really? From the people I've talked to they'd prefer that over a huge banner or multiple buttons/pop-ups.

KNK...Sounds good. Only Professional sites.

That's a great idea you got there. I just have 1 question, how do you automatically place it on the user's web site? cron job? (just wondering).. good luck!

syanet

SSI code. This gives the user the ability to change the colors to always conform to the rest of their site.

Chris
January 27th, 2001, 15:28
I would think you are going to have a hard time enforcing that.

BiteTheBugByte
January 27th, 2001, 17:27
IŽd go with you, if youŽd allow adult content ;)

My site IS professional and legal, adult content hasnŽt to be always illegal, as said in your TOS.

Anyways, nice offer though

I tried signing up, but it won't let me send my request mail out :(

Do you have an email address where I can send the sign-up info to?

Oh man! It needs to be professional? Do you mean professional as in the content or the design? Anyway, check my site out and see if that is professional (I guess not :(): http://hermes.spaceports.com/~zam2k/ndc/.

Syanet, what about people with their own mp3 creations? I tend to enjoy making loops for flashkit, but what if I want to allow people to download them from my site hosted there? And what if we have trial software there to download that has a connection to what's on the site? And just how many html pages do you require them to have? I know I wouldn't want to make a seperate page for every picture, download, news articles etc.You should really refine your TOS. I know you have to cover your own ---, but you should also make exceptions to those who are legit.

Agreed! Well, I'd rather have that than a banner or pop up for a personal page, but a "professional" site should not have an ad at the top with links to "Win free N64 Games!" and "Free web hosting" . I think a regular ad banner would be better than this. Tons of "professional" sites have them.

Question for whateverhosting :

How do you guys pay your bill when you don't put any ads or banners on the pages ???

syanet
January 28th, 2001, 11:45
GRiN...That site works fine. I mean professional as in ites that aren't 90% blind links.

Zitech_Industries...That would be accetable. As long as you own the rights to them, they can be uploaded. I'll refine the TOS to say that.

Canuckkev...That's just an example. The terms can be modified to reflect what your site offers.

I think it's pretty nice and definitely preferable to most ad bars. For me, it's not the ads but the animation in the ads that drives me nuts. But where do you get your revenue from? This just looks like links to your site and a search box. Does the search provide revenue, and if so, do you think it would be enough to cover costs?

syanet
January 28th, 2001, 20:35
The search and the first link provide revenue, while there is a link to my main site also on it. This recruits more people, which should in turn provide more revenue.

km
January 29th, 2001, 00:20
will the ad bar turn into a banner/popup if the ad bar revenue is too low?

dummy
January 29th, 2001, 01:20
This adbar doesn't look so bad. Nick, look at NBCI one for a moment, then you'll how really annoying adbar looks like.

Anyway, I think that they'll introduce banners or popups or whatsoever, 'cause almost all webhosts have done so. But who knows.

Ashed
January 29th, 2001, 04:55
Cool, I'm signing up for it. :D

syanet
January 29th, 2001, 06:40
I'll have to say no to turning to pop-ups in the future. With the ad bar having customized terms on each site, I highly doubt click through will be a problem. I think this ad bar idea will succeed because the user is able to customize it to fit their site's colors. Much unlike Xoom's old bar.

Canuckkev
January 29th, 2001, 11:50
Okay, it's not that bad. For now I'll stick with 100% ad free hosts while they last.

Technics
January 29th, 2001, 12:00
Honest Opinion but that Ad-Bar looks daft.

Chris
January 29th, 2001, 16:35
Yeah, agreed; it does look more unprofessional than xoom.

syanet
January 29th, 2001, 16:48
How do you figure? It's customizeable and easily placeable. Much better than Xoom's ugly forced banners.

Technics
January 29th, 2001, 17:16
Why not just put a banner there and make some real cash?

syanet
January 29th, 2001, 17:42
Then I'd be just like every other host out there. This is a pretty unique alternative to banners and people have responded to it. Besides a handful of people, I've heard nothing but good things about the bar.

They might be ugly but at least they aren't IN your pages.

syanet

Possibly placing the search box somewhere else on your site along with the text links.

LeX
January 30th, 2001, 07:41
lemme get this straight... you can earn cash by putting a search box and not through ad clicks???

or does someone have to actually search for something in order to generate revenue?

I think the links beside the search box are ugly and useless - or do they also generate revenue??

A lot of search engines pay you to put search boxes on your site and you get a few cents for every search. It works like this:

a.) You put up the search box.
b.) Users do a search.
c.) They go to the search engine's result pages.
d.) Ads are on those pages; therefore, they get revenue and you get a small percent of it.

syanet
January 30th, 2001, 13:31
Exactly right. I get paid everytime a search is run. Did you think I just wnated to put it on everyone's site for the look :)? One of the text links generates revenue while the other brings people back to my main site.
