Of course, I tried winamp, but it wouldn't play any mpeg4 content and I couldn't get the plugins working correctly.
I need something that plays mp3's and mpeg4 audio and video.
Thanks.

WMP or WMP Classic in combination with the K-Lite Codec Pack.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I'm already using vlc for video, I need a dedicated music player.

why install two bits of software when you have a piece of software that does what you want already ?? also you said audio and video in your OP

Winamp should be able to play Mpeg4 files... Have you tried installing the K-Lite Codec Pack?

Hmm. Converting the Mpeg4 files to MP3 is not option either?

I downloaded foobar last night, I think it'll be what I need.
iTunes?
The computer I'm putting it on only has a PIII.

In other words: Apple can't manage to develop efficient applications.

Total Video Player (http://www.download.com/3000-2139_4-10579867.html). Plays pretty much every type of video/audio. Supports playlists.

VLC .. plays almost everything and u dont have to be bothered with codecs....

VLC is good for playing everything, but it fails at playing anything well. The bundled libavcodec (ffmpeg) is a very old version, the interface isn't user friendly (slider for seek bar?) and several implementations just don't work (---/SSA softsubs, I'm talking to you).

I use foobar for music and Media Player Classic for video.
I use this codec pack.

I dare you to find a codec not in this pack (http://free-codecs.com/download/ACE_Mega_CoDecS_Pack.htm).

I dare you to find a codec not in CCCP.

It's not a matter of how many codecs are in a pack. That's bloat.
It's about having the fewest files that will play the most files.

Whats wrong with WMP with a codec pack?

There are two main options:
1) VLC
2) Media Player Classic
I use the second cause the interface is real simple and slick. It can play most videos, except for x264, xvid, and other specialized codecs. But I can just install those on the side if I need them.

I can't belive nobody mentioned RealPlayer. It has an awesome interface, even better than iTunes (that including the iPod managment)

MediaMonkey? If you have an iPod it's great, it adds the album cover to the ID3
