Try SpaceTowns. Some people don't like em, but I just started with them, and they seem ok. The have FTP access, and you get 50 MB, of space. They also have good support.
If you want 25 MB more, and the text link removed from your page (they have no ads, just a text link, but that can be removed by...) , you just have to sign up for Seti@HOME, its a thing that runs in the background of your computer, looking for Extra-terrestrial life. I don't beleive in it, but I want the extra webspace and no ads! :)

Yes, 9cy (http://www.9cy.com) is probably the best I know. They offer 100 MB hosting for free, with a few pop-ups every 24-hrs.
Topcities (http://www.topcities.com) is another excellent host that offers 150 MB for free. By simply making a syntax error with your HTML (such as not including the <html> tag), or inputting <!-- %%NOBANNER%% --> somewhere on your pages, you can turn the banner ad into a pop-up. Trust me, this is perfectly legal. This is even mentioned in their FAQ (pop-ups probably make more money for Topcities anyway). :)
You can also try Lunarpages (http://www.lunarpages.com) (1 pop-up per 72 hrs., less than 50 MB though) or T35 (http://www.t35.com) (quite a lot of pop-ups, but I believe it's something like 3 pop-ups per 24 hrs). T35 had unlimited space, if you had only signed up earlier, but I believe they only offer 35 MB. (http://www.9cy.com)

@t35.com most of the times its only 1 pop-up under (not per page.. per whole account) or even none.. and if you see the 1, you won't see it again for 48 hours.
At some times during the day it will get as bad as 1 pop-up under on every page, for the first 2-3 pages viewed. Than no ads for a while.
And it IS unlimited space.
