Ive seen people do this before but im not sure how to do it.

I want to setup my computer so every night i press the power button on my pc and it will go into hibernation. and Whenever i wish i just push the power button again and it will resume into windows.
How would i be able to do that?
I have:
windows xp professional sp2 all latest updates.

you can do that if you look for the option : energy
its on configuration options
you can bind a key so your computer goes to sleep
also it lets you choose howlong it takes to put your screen out disable hard drives or shutsdown the compy
same for hybernation

start-->configurationscreen--> energie(controle)
as you can see loads of options availible

let me know if it works

Ensure the BIOS is setup to allow it, then right click on the desktop - pick 'properties' then 'screen saver' then click the 'power' button (bottom right corner) hibernate, enable it, then 'advanced' tab and set 'when I press the power button' drop down to Hibernate - done :D

you sure that wont make it so i cant startup my computer for a year or something..

Someone told me awhile back to be careful with hibernation.

You have two 'rapid resume' options (an old IBM term) suspend or hibernate, suspend relies on power (be it battery or mains) being there as it's really just low power mode, lose power lose resume, hibernate saves the content of memory (physical RAM) to be saved to a special file on disk, so you can even take out the HDD and put it in another system (there will be problems with that unless it's identical in every way) and on switch on it reads the file and restores the memory contents - this does need full BIOS support as it can go haywire due to physical RAM being totally written to (not quite but almost - there is a small 'free' section used to run the tasks required to do the job).

And hibernate is more reliable now than ever - it did use to be a bit tricky but that was about 5-10 years ago (depending on hardware manufacturer)

Hope that lot helps out and sets your mind at rest :)

Hibernate is awesome and an often overlooked feature. It seems to be missing from Vista although if you sleep and cut off the power it does the same job.

Yep, they stopped messing around with that one - at last and 'oh my god I just said something good about Vista' please don't quote me!

Not enough contiguous disk space to create the hiberfil.sys file or it's corrupted.
Or your machine is f*****

How do i get to that configuration screen? You were a bit confusing in that reply.
