View Full Version : Tipping the hair cutter?

So I got a haircut yesterday.
And today my little sister informed me that I should of have gave a tip to the person. She said you always give a tip if you like the haircut.
Of course I didnt agree with her. When I go cut my hair, I *expect* her to do a good job, it's part of her salary.
What about you, do you give a tip when you go cut your hair and you like it?

I don't think so either.. I mean, that's basically their job right? To cut hair for us... Seriously, nowadays every job requests a tip, I just don't agree (this is coming from someone who had job which required tipping).

That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. And if the haircutter did do a bad job, I wouldn't pay him or her.
Though as Dean said, it doesn't really happen in Australia.

I mostly don't tip(mainly because I don't have the money to) but sometimes if I feel like it I might give a $1 :)

Depends where I go... Most of the time I go to Supercuts, and I know those people are paid like... minimum wage, so I'll give the person $3 or so. But if i'm at Regis or something, paying $35-40 for a haircut... They don't need it.

What? No!
Why tip someone for a job I'm capable of doing myself? I can deliver food. I can drive a taxi. I can, and do, cut my own hair. I did however, tip my urologist, because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.

Tipping OMG, never, I would rather give the tip to some homeless person who REALLY needs it unless he or she is one of these homeless millionaires with a dog, bastards.

I always tip after getting my haircut. No less than $3, and no more than $5. Typically it's $5, but if i happen to have $4 dollars, that's what they get.
I tip because they don't always make a lot of money. Where I go, each barber "rents" out a chair from the owner of the building. The cost is $200/monthly. The guy charges $10 dollars per head. So he has cut at least 20 heads before he can pay the monthly rent. After that, everything is profit. So the faster he can pay off his rent and start making money, the better for all of us.
Though I keep telling him that if he's making a decent profit, he should just start doing it at his house or going to people's homes.
Anyways, I always tip for certain services, such as: getting a hair cut, any food delivery (pizza, Chinese, etc), when I eat at a restaurant with a waiter, valet parking, etc.

I'm basically the same as Robert as far as tipping goes. I go to a stylist, and she ballin', so I'm not sure if she really needs the $5 I give her as tip that much.

But ya, sometimes, there are exceptions so tipping is more of a moral issue...

I just go to Great Clips 99% of the time, so yes, I tip. They're probably making minimum wage or close to it. And I tend to feel bad, because I'm a terrible barber shop conversationalist, so $4 or $5 makes up for it :p

i give a tip if they do a really good job. it is a way of letting them know you were really satisfied with the job they did. it is obviously not required that you tip, but, it is nice. sort of like when you DJ. if you do a really good job and everyone has a ton of fun, then you should get a tip, but, most people wont tip you even if they have an excellent time.

No but i bet you get plenty of pats on the back from your buzzed up party-goer's, it doesn't pay the bills but it certainly makes your night im sure :):)
Oh, PS: I have only tipped twice ever when getting a haircut... once due to it nearly being at my ankles and i felt really really guilty about her spending 30 mins more on me than anybody else lol and the other time, she was my mum :P

I always tip, even if I don't like it~ I give 10 if I don't like the hair cut, 20+ if I do~ But then I only go to my stylist every other year so the cost evens out~

I'm guessing she's a girl? I dunno, I guess she cuts her hair short every 2 years and waits for it grow again.

I don't have one memory of going to a hairdresser, when I was a kid my brothers shaved my head for me, now I do it myself every couple of weeks ....
EDIT: I asked my mum because it seems strange, I've only been into a hairdresser once, I behaved, and I quote "like devil spawn", she bought clippers on the way home that very same day ....

Gender doesn't matter. I've always heard if you don't go at least once every 3 months -ish then you'll start to get split ends?
Then again, that might be a myth circulated by stylists around the world to keep business up.

What are split ends? Some hair longer than others? If so then I don't think she really minds.. There are a lot of girls I know who likes split ends so...

Split ends are when the hair actually splits at the end. It's a sign of unhealthy hair. And no, what you're talking about (I'm not sure of the exact name), a lot of people have that (myself included).

Ah, ok, never mind then. But I guess as long as the person takes good care of their hair, split ends won't be an issue? My mom doesn't cut her hair regularly (i.e. In intervals of 3-4 months) and her hair is pretty healthy.

I tip anybody whom I feel deserves to be tipped for their service, service that made me happy and/or satisfied. To date, only a few girls got my tip. What?
