Just signed up for my drivers license and ticked the box.
I'm not religious or anything, I'm not going to be using when I'm dead so I figured why not.

Let me start of by saying that I donate blood every 2 months, platelets every 4-6 weeks, and I am on the bone marrow list. In fact, a few months ago I was a match for a 12 year old who needed bone marrow, but in the end, they found someone closer to him to donate. I also am CMV negative, which means that my blood/platelets can be given to infants. So because I am CMV negative, and not many CMV negative donors donate, I donate as much blood as possible.
With that said, I am not a organ donor. I don't mind having my organs donated after I have died, but there has been countless of articles and reports over the years citing that when doctors find out a patient is a organ donor, they don't do everything possible to save the patient. In the end, regardless if it's true or not, I want to make sure a doctor saves me for me, not for my organs. But I have written instructions that allow my next of kin to donate my organs after I've been declared dead.

sorry, i want to be buried in one piece. i believe that the soul cant rest properly if your body is not all in one place. i dont have a problem with donating blood or bone marrow, but, my organs are mine dammit. now, if i had to donate a kidney or something to save my wifes life, or my children's lives (future children that is) then i would consider giving something up to save them, otherwise, nope.

Although I don't see anything wrong with anything you're doing, and in fact I respect you for everything that you are doing, I don't think that story about the doctors doing that is true.. and it angers me that there are stories like that published in papers as it will put many people off donating.
Doctors generally do whatever they can to save a life, not let one go to save another.. I reckon they'd know they have no right to do that.
On a similar note, if you're deemed braindead would you mind being simply.. let go? As I've peviously stated I'm not religious or anything so I have no reason not to.

Robert: Are you aware that the organs only can survive for 4-5 hours after death?
Newsflash people! When you die; and choose to be buried, your body firstly gets squashed by the weight of the soil above you - then your rotting flesh gets eaten by bugs. It's not like you need them after death.
By donating your organs you can save up to SEVEN lives. Just imagine if you were on a waiting list for one.

Yep, I would donate my organs.. I mean, I hope I would've had a great life and a full life. I would love to share it with another person. I'm not really religious, but I believe even if I donated organs when I was religious I would reap the benefits in the "afterlife" for saving people.
I was questioning about life/meaning/death for years. Only recently have I made the conclusion that I don't care about any of those things. I only want to do some good in the world so there will at least a few people who would've known me/ heard of me years after my death.
There is no meaning to life. Just live... And help others on the way.

i would rather die than to have someone else's organs. if i am dying and i need a transplant, then it must just be my time to go. that is just how i look at it. yeah, i would want to try to save the life of my wife and children, but, me myself, i would rather just pass on.
Dean

Exactly, eventually, when it's time for you to go, you won't be sad for you, you will be sad for the people you left behind.
Dean

The thing is too.. its not only old people in their final hour that need a organ transplant - infants sometimes require transplants.

I hate that mindset, because it's never your time to go. You don't have to go.
Another reason I don't give organs is to help fight overpopulation.

Dean,
I would rather die than give blood. I hate hate hate needles. If they could cut my arm and drip it into a bag, then sure, why not... I would donate my organs, but the Johava's Wittness people said that was bad. LOL... I'll donate my organs when i am of legal age to check that box on my DL.

October 13th, 2007, 14:30
I would not because I believe I should be buried in one piece. It is kind of odd for me to think about having my organs taken out but perhaps at a later stage in life I will reconsider it.
Decker
October 13th, 2007, 15:42
Additional from me, Eclouds has a good point in their own convictions, and myself have a 'full set' of what I was born with (1 tooth missing due to a rugby match and a guy decided a boot would look good in my mouth rather than tackle me - they still lost the points as it didn't stop me hehe).
My body has been through the mill and anything that might be needed would have 'questionable content' (ie already knackered), so I said no.
Everyone has a right to their privacy which includes your body parts and this should never be called into question nor should anyone be asked to account for themselves in these matters.
I have also required rapid emergency treatment, not involving organs, in the past and (really) appreciate all that is involved, but I do feel bad with adverts/coersion on forcing people to change their beliefs (non-religious) in these matters.
People are all individuals and should be allowed to be so, so those happy with the idea, go for it, those nervous about it be nervous and say maybe, those against it say no - and no one should question their choice or 'classify' them due to it.
Putting my speech platform away now :fangel:

Yes. If I am declared braindead or put into a vegetative state, then I want life support to be discontinued. I've seen what it's like to be in a vegetative state, and I do not want to put my family through that. It's a big burden on the family, both financially and emotionally.

Lastly, I am not going to be buried. I want to be cremated.
I have saved many lives already because I am CMV Negative. My platelets along is enough to save two adults - and I've donated platelets for over 2 years now, it adds up!

Having been the one to call it for my father, recusitated many times and no life quality, I agree with you Robert.
It's a hard one to make but there is a line you have to cross to remain human yourself.

With that alone you should get a flaming medal, my blood type is 'unusual' but not quite one that can be used seemingly, comes down to white/red counts rather than type which is suitable for most and great for some but highly active on a reactive level (this is bad). I did sciences and have degrees in them and I can only start to understand it at a level of 'no sorry but thanks' Physics,Chemistry and Maths are mine which includes the workings of blood types, or it should until the finer details then I'm lost - and have been by those that deal with hematology.
