Just curious,

Do half of these yahoos that request huge web space/bandwdth ever even use half of it?
I bet they don't.

To be honest, I was once a free hosting user. Technically I still am, I have an account somewhere that needs to be cancelled within a few days.

I used to look for the hosts that gave away the most amount of space, thinking it would be good for the future. I used to assume that I would just grow into it.

In reality, a 50mb account is plenty. 100mb is enough for a very reasonable sized site.

From what i've seen, those hosts that give out tons of space for free... well, they don't last long.

Also, no, they don't. I used to host about 10 free accounts on my server, and most of the free accounts had under 10mb's used.

well, forums take most usage for mysql or whatever there are written.
Mostly you need space either for images or mp3.

You are right alley.
The large majority of people requesting 1 GB of space will probably use about 200 MB of it.

These are figures, which attract new clients, in both free and paid.

Thats why, the oversellers like HostGator, BlueHost etc. are still in market.

I was just curious, because I think the most space I ever used on a site was something like 700MB

I use only about 170mb disk space on my site and I have 3 forums on it.

Mostly you look for bandwidth, because I use a lot of bandwidth, but disk space is actually not needed for much. The usual packages I look for are 10gb disk space 100gb bandwidth, with room for more bandwidth if needed.
TBH I used Bluehost before for a wile, they oversell their produicts and you may say you "might" use all 300gb space, but if you even got close to it, they would come up with some excuse to get rid of you.

The most I've used was 100 megs because my email address was getting used as a spoof variable somehow and I kept getting returned mail that was blocked by spam filters. I'm talking about hundreds of returned spam messages.

I just got an account with one of the bigger free hosting names out there. The backup I uploaded was only about 18 megs but somehow I managed to double that (unless the backups are severely compressed). Right now I'm using 76megs because I uploaded the backups to a folder for the host owner to grab my root directory files after it screwed up when I restored the backup, which was from another host. :confused4

Oh and.. Thread title made me lol.

in my earlier, less honest days, I would fill up well over a gig of space, and use the full 50gb that I was alloted (paid server though) and had a few free ones that offered this before my account was justified as being terminated.

Now I may use 100-200, if that between my site and forum (my forum had like 10K posts and was 20ish mb in sql size.)

Not free hosting, but I had a client that used 3 gigs. All legal of course. No videos, no audio files, no applications.
