Hello.
Please share you thoughts.
I think that VPS has two faces:
- need to be managed as dedicated server
- share server with other customers.
Prices are also different.
If you were me which solution would you go with?
PS I do not worry about money

Get a small dedicated server with managed firewall and you're good to go...

Tricky one, Depends on the VPS And Budget Dedicated Server...
VPS could be way faster when your talking about a 1GB dedicated ram VPS on a vpsnode with 8+ CPU cores Vs a Budget crappy 512mb ram 2Ghz celey
The VPS would win,
It really depends how much money your willing to spend, If you have 100+ then you would be able to get a nice dedicated server thats better than "most" vps's.

I would go with dedicated personally, It's much more secure.

Agreed. Plus with a dedicated you have the full control. Most VPS Nodes are configured for minimal firewall rules to allow for flexibility on the VPS'. More of a possibility of ending up with an oversold provider and you only having minimal burst availability with a VPS.

A VPS is cheaper than a dedi and has the same functions. Nearly the same.

Are you considering managed vps and dedicated options?
I guess managed dedicated with a lot of RAM is better, if you have enough RAM.

I'd prefer a small dedicated server over a VPS. It does really depend on the specs you would be getting. Since money doesn't worry you then you might as well get a dedicated server.

Large VPS.

Reason:

Better and more reliable hardware - A small / cheap dedicated server is old and used, the reliablity of it.. is suspect at the best of times - If you care about your data and the speed of your sites/server, a VPS is the way to go.

Don't get me wrong - Cheap dedi's are good, but you should only use them if you have to (EG: using them for something you can't do on a VPS)

VPS's will run much faster than cheap dedicated servers, as they are running on newer technologie, for example, look at the AMD vs Intel CPU - The AMD's are slower, but compete with higher Intels, its the same with old CPU's and new CPU's. 300 MHz with an AMD X2 or Core2Duo will do much more than 800 MHz on a P2.

All in all - Go for the VPS, as even tho it may have smaller specifications - It will run faster due to the fact that technologie has evolved.

I agree aswell - You can also purchase offsite backups and the reliability concern minimizes because you never have to worry about what you will do if your harddrive fails.

Go with a VPS, much more stable.

Now, hosting-shack, are you saying that all AMD CPUs are slower than Intel CPUs? ---Reply in a PM.

AMD's are typically faster than most comparable Intel processors. Not slower-- they just have a different naming scheme.

Richard

Sorry if I was not clear - AMD's are slower in clockspeed (GHz) but compete with higher clockspeed Intel's.

EG: a 2.1GHz amd (2400+) competes (and mostly beats) with a 2.4GHz Intel.

VPS all the way on that one. It'll even be cheaper in most cases.

Does management of VPS involve the same amount of time and expertise as the management of dedicated?

Darknight
November 27th, 2007, 07:42
Pretty much, Yes.. Except for adding IP ranges ect, Thats always done by the VPS provider... Where with dedicated some providers make you do it yourself. But overall it takes just as much to manage a VPS.

Well, VPS is 99.99 % Dedicated server ( as far as the features are concerned ) .

You have the same root access but with slight restrictions.

Nice reason, I agree

I also agree. Large Vps more reliable part and ofcourse get it managed.

From experience, VPS and dedicated services are virtually the same (pun not intended).

I do have to say though that VPS resources can be upgraded in 5 minutes, and getting Dedi's upgraded is more of a hassle, so if its a real tos up, go with a VPS. ;)

Well it dependso n who your provider is. At GeekRack we manage our clients servers for them so they usualy just get on with there site. Althouh many get a vps because they need high bw and space and theres usualy better resources on a big vps then a small dedicated.

Well as all u people are saying a BIG VPS will definitely be an advantage due to the better computing and ram available at lower prices , although in some applications that are only for dedicated ones they are at a disadvantage .

But for most purposes a VPS is a better reliable option these days .

I come from WHT. What I don't like folks there, is they usually just say go for dedicated!! dedicated FTW!! I don't understand why such a professional forum act like that when a topic like VPS vs. Dedicated comes up. Well, we all know that dedicated is much better "ultimately" but definitely not on a cheap box.

The only advantage of low-end dedicated is you are the only one on it using it and a bit more secure, bandwidth & space. Other than that, it's all VPS. To the end, if you are running somethings serious, VPS and low-end dedicated may not be your choice either.

Clearly VPS advantages:
1. Go up to level 2/3 support for free as many as you want while cheap dedicated is unmanaged or only level1 support.

2. You get the top notch hardware from brand name vendors like Dell/HP while cheap dedicated might/should be on an used server which is a lot older than my desktop, and from an unknown vendor. Aged hardware tends to get more unstable things and HD failures.

3. RAID protection for an extra benefit(anyway, offsite backup is still required).

4. Premium bandwidth(reliable, fast, good uptime) vs. value/slow/outage network

5. When somethings go wrong, money back guarantee(or least say, extra credits) is more likely to real happen on a good VPS provider than a cheap dedicated box provider

6. Resources upgrade/downgrade on VPS is much more easier

7. There might be some hidden fees on low-end dedicated providers

8. OS re-image, backup/restore, hard reboot is very easy via VPS panel but normally you won't get these stuffs for free on cheap dedicated.

9. There are many decent VPS providers but only a couple of good cheap dedicated providers there I know of. You get more choice.

The only time I will look for a cheap dedicated is I need plenty of space & bandwidth.
