So theres a domain I have been looking to get for a school club. It drops on nov 11th and its not much of a top domain, so I thought it would be easy to grab. It just popped up on snap names as a "domain auction" to begin on November 11th (the drop date). What exactly does that mean? Is snap domains going to grab the domain as soon as it becomes available and put it on auction on their site or is there still a chance I can grab it myself?

They're refered to as 'Drop Catchers' and every possibility they'll grab it, some registrars will let you 'pre-order' but it's much the same thing.
Basically your timing would have to be good to get it as they have automated systems that leach info from whois and combine it with seach crawlers to find possible domain names that may sell, and grab them the second they expire to the point they can be moved without the registrants permission. Some you can get back after they've done it, I did one of our .info's I'd forgotten about 2 weeks ago. It depends on the domain name/type/tld.
Good luck with it.
