Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but it doesn't fit anywhere else...

So, whats the deal with web hosting reseller programs?

Anyone got any experiences? Can you think of any good programs? Good way to earn? etc, etc, etc...

Just curious to hear your general feedback.

Don Host has the best reseller programs...JUST KIDDING. Umm, I don't know to to much about them but I think almost all resellers aren't very good hosts, (almost all hosts) most of the time it isn't the Host themselves but who they are reselling from. I tend to keep away from them...how the hell did I end up on a don host???

I have a reseller account, but I don't resell the space. There good for people like me that multiple domains. It's a lot more convenient and inexpensive to get a reseller account then to buy an account for each domain, heh. I'm using Genius-Hosting (http://www.genius-hosting.com). I haven't been using them very long, but so far I like them.

I have been thinking of doing a reseller with Myacen, but we'll see.

I don't think running a hosting business on them is a good idea, but if you do web design and have lots of clients, or you have lots of sites yourself I think its a great idea - I'm getting one hopefully! :D

it is hard to believe from the looks of that site that they are the largest host?!?!?

guitarnerd
March 24th, 2002, 02:32
hahaha, yeah sure

2. UNLIMITED TRAFFIC! Most of our competitors limit the number of "hits" or web accesses your site will be allowed. We don't believe in penalizing you or your site for success! We do not actively monitor your site traffic and we only charge extra for very high traffic sites - see FAQ #22 for more details.

Sure the largest host has unlimited bandwidth. that is pretty funny, maybe they are huge, but comon unlimited bandwidth. Maybe hight to them is 4gig

dude, most of their money comes from resellers... I don't even think the people care about the site anymore.... they are based in Texas so that's why I know

Everyone at this forum that knows something about hosting, knows not to trust unlimited plans, because it is false advertisement. There is no such thing as unlimited.

So, anyone got any ideas who I should look at setting up a reseller program with? (UK based would be a bonus...)

First of all, what's your budget? Then there are 2 types of reseller plans. You can set up an account with a host and resell their packages. This style reselling doesn't require alot of cash (if any) up front. Of course you are limited to the plans your hosts offers but if they are semi-decent then it's sometimes a good place to start and then you could work up to the next kind of reselling.

This is where you buy a larger slice of space and transfer and divide up those resources into your own plans. The outlay per month is more and if you haven't got any clients from day 1 then it can be costly. This type of plan normally comes with your own personalised nameservers which can be essential to a hosting company.

Just some food for thought when thinking of diving into the reseller biz. :)

Do resellers pre install the CP and stuff for you, are do you have to decide on what you want and do that? Another thing is, how much does a CP cost?

you will have to use the CP that the company provides as far as i know. and CPs tend to cost arond US$500 for a licence to use them.

I'm 22. I am taking it slow I have been looking in various parts of hosting for over a year now. I am familiarizing myself with Linux also. I am not gonna start a host on a dedicated server and have something happen that I cant fix. I have considered resellers but I dont want a good customer base on a reseller and the ppl I resell for to screw me with crappy service or get a dedicated server and have all my old customers on a reseller plan and have to pay for both until I can move ppl off the reseller. I have a few friends that are network admins and they can help with Linux probs but I don't want to rely on them and not be able to get a hold of them should a problem arise. I know hosting isn't an easy job and most don't do it for profit but for the fun or challenge. My idea is not to make a bunch of money but make a profit and if I can provide a great product at a great price then I can build a strong customer base. I have the resources such as good credit to attain a loan as well as collateral (e.g my house & car) to help securing a loan. And not to mention I am old enough to legally do things on my own.

That's who I'm signed up with. Check out my homepage, I've been pretty happy. I didn't pay what they have listed on their site for the reseller program, and I have higher limits than what they have posted. They're a reseller, reseller. They get offers from people selling space and pass it on to me. They had me with 5GB limit per month and I told them I needed more, so they changed who I'm with and now I have 10GB per month. Can't beat it for the price.

i dont like the idea of a reseller reseller. resellers are ok!!! but not someone reselling their resold space

I am guessing they're a reseller reseller, here is from their FAQ:

Q) How does dHex work?

A) We scour the world for the best values in webhosting and bring that to you. The webhosting providers send us their offers and we screen the offers before we make it available to you. The best value is made available to you as the Current Special.

So maybe their just a middle man and skim some cash off the sale. Oh well they have 800 tech support and I've been real happy w/ 'em. dHex is owned by a subsidiary of iGiri, LLC; a Nevada LLC (whatever that is worth). And they list a buncha people who are supposed to be important here:

http://www.dhex.com/about.asp

Had 1 downtime in a month, and it was resolved within 5 minutes on the phone.

If it goes to crap I'll post on here too ;oP Just stay away from www.datapacket.net !!!!

Technically Myacen is a reseller, reseller, I THINK that they buy rackshack decicated servers, and then do ressellers off that, I don't mind as long as I feel I can trust the company and if I hear good stuff from other people about them

ducktape
March 27th, 2002, 03:00
that is what myacen does is lease rackshack servers and resell space.

NexDog

Hi,

Yes, Myacen leases servers off Rackshack just as we do off Rackspace but I would hardly call us resellers. We rely on DCs for hardware support etc but the services are ours. We are responsible for the running of the server etc.

Of course if you pick it apart, the space on the HD is part of the server which is leased hosts like us with deds (99%) could be called resellers as that space isn't "ours". But the difference between this and normal reselling is in the understanding of the terminology......

dHex.....that's actually not a bad idea. I mean, how many middle men are there before a product at the store gets to you? Not too surprising that there would be middle men popping up in the hosting industry. I believe they would be called independent resellers since they dont have to rely on the host's reseller plans.
