View Full Version : Hospitals suck
Ben

So yesterday afternoon I decided to go shopping. After about an hour, I started to get a bit nauseated. Didn't think too much of it, but ah well.
I got home and puked my entrails out / near-constant diarrhea for a good 3 hours. I tried to drink some alka-seltzer, and threw it up. Crackers, threw them up. Water, no good. Compazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compazine), and it came back up about 20 minutes later. My dad thought I'd be fine but I could tell something was up, so I called my mom and she came to get me and bring me to the hospital. Good thing, too. My blood pressure was 90/40 and my pulse was 140bpm, temperature of 100.6F and I was severely dehydrated. I ended up being put on saline IV for a good 3 hours with two shots of anti-nausea medicine through the IV at the beginning then about an hour later. My vein collapsed and the had to re-stick me with the IV. I thought it might have been food poisoning, but they told me it was a bad --- virus that had been going around and that i'd be sick for at least 48 hours.
So, over all, yesterday sucked. I'm still really weak, which explains why I don't feel like correcting the grammar in my post. Ugh.
Go have a beer for me, FWS. I shall try to get better soon.

Murses piss me off.
I was in the hospital once, and I was told by the attending that my nurse, Jojo, would be in to check on me soon.
I thought....nurse named Jojo....this HAS to be good.
Then this dude in some scrubs walks in. I look at him curiously, as if to suggest he was in the wrong room.
"Hi, I'm Jojo, I'll be your nurse"
I kept on wanting to wake up from the nightmare, but I COULDN'T.

I have been in the hospital this week as well, hence why my presence around here has been slim. Looks like I may have to go back for a slightly extended period of time soon. May have gallbladder disease. Hope you feel better Ben.

They didn't identify any specific virus, but they (the RN/PAs) did say there has been a large amount of people with the same thing as what I got recently...

I just looked up Sylva. It seemed kinda familiar to me, but looking at it, I have been there a few times.
That's the town for Western North Carolina State U. A few of my friends went there after high school (and failed out).
It is backwoods like crazy. The locals are hillbillys for real and despise the college kids. Also for some reason I think it's in a dry county.

That's basically how he described it ... super-hick. Although he didn't go there for college, just to live since apparently the real estate is mega cheap. He commutes to some other town to work. But I've never been there ...
utcrazy: Thanks, dude. I'm almost 100% now. Just tired.
BV: FWS should be detrimental to that fact.

^^that depends what you mean - if you mean, as I assume you do - that I don't get to choose my doctor, then yes that does suck. While I don't pretend to fully understand your system, anything that limits my ability to say "I am going to see Dr Johnson; and then I'm going to get a 2nd opinion from Dr Jimson" is a bad thing. But of course you're not generally a "political point of reference"; our government is always promising we'll have healthcare quality more like France and Italy and less like the USA.

We do get to pick our doctor. I wouldn't say it's brilliant, but I wouldn't say it sucked.
Let's just say it's not amazing enough that people don't have private healthcare - a lot do have medical insurance for better healthcare (independant companies), even though the NHS is free.

Yes, but if "public GPs" can't set their own prices, there's no competition. I mean, my doctor charges I think $60. You get about $36 (it may be a little more) back from Medicare - so the net cost to me would be $24 or less. Alternatively I could go to another practise that charges $48, I'd get the same money back from Medicare and the net cost would be $12 - or, I could go to a practise that "bulk bills" - that means they don't charge the Medicare levy and instead collect it straight from Medicare (rather then from you, and you being reimbursed later).
When things are "free" people do not value them; and they get abused. For instance, one state in Australia did a trial of making Ambulances free - they found that many more people called the ambulance instead of seeing their doctor because it was "free". Medicine is also cheap in Australia, but not free (since the government chips in to pay for the largest slice in the pie). I think whiles there's much room still for improvement that it is the right model, and I wouldn't be in favour of making everything just "free".
