Frontpage ever going to get a lick of paint? I visited for the first time in about 8 years and it's still exactly the same. Or is it now that the forums are the main focus?

Just wondering is all pirate2

I'm aware of that and I'm working on it. I hope to have the new design and the new database ready in a couple of months.

The homepage to FWS is like a trip down memory lane...

Ahhh...homestead. How we barely knew thee.

It would be awesome if the forums were moved to the root freewebspace.net and then the directory was moved to some place like freewebspace.net/directory!

We'd become a full-fledged hosting forum then eh?

Nearly 80,000 members is about as fully fledged as you get ...

It makes sense for the forum to be here, dont forget most people looking for free hosting are just wanting a host, they don't want to socialize and so have no real reason to signup at the forum ...

Not for much longer ...

I disagree,

Half of the good hosts here on the forums that hook people up aren't even listed on the main site the last time I checked. I think most people score on free hosting off of the FWS forums.

The main part of the site is out of date for sure, but you wouldn't and couldn't know that "most people that score on free hosting" are doing it on the forums, because there's no way for you to know ...

You can't search the forums for a specific sort of host - the nature of a forum prohibits a good result - even if you use common sense and search for "cpanel host fantastico" the forum could easily turn up results where replies to the thread are asking about cpanel or fantastico and are asking a provider that supplies neither, plus the task of filtering through the results from such keywords is an overwhelming task. No doubt you would end up posting a request, which you then have to sit and watch for a reply, which could take days to get what you want, surely it would be better if you could ask and receive within seconds of finding FWS ...

The aim of FWS is a hosting directory and database, a forum cannot achieve that. I think if the index of the site were a little more featured, and gave a user the correct tools to advertise or find hosting it would be an invaluable tool one that a forum cannot compete with. Dont get me wrong the forum is great and everything, but a forum cant be a website, they are too messy.

As for host's not submitting their data to the database, that's their loss, as freewebspace.net invariably comes up before any posts in the forum do where hosting keywords are used.

Well an alternative to that is to build the directory into the forums, which is a neat idea although probably not desirable. By doing this you could link the host's accounts to the host entry, and have all offers made by them indexed under the host. Granted this probably could be better achieved by a bridge between the directory database and the forum..would be an interesting feature if it could be perfected - just pick up all the new-thread posts made by the host in the free hosting offers, and index them, with the newest one as the prominent link and the old ones archived (since they probably aren't relevant) You could also then go into an indexing feature to pick out posts with feedback.

I don't know if any of this has already been thought of, but I think it would be a good idea, gives a consolidated view of the host: the features, feedback from other people, issues the host may have had, the manner in which they deal with clients and crisis etc.

Just a couple suggestions that I thought would be useful.

The main site looks bad compared to this forum.....how about making the main site look like the forum?

I did but...I still think that the main site is a bit dull and plain....I was thinking...maybe something a bit better. A total remake of the main site....

Oh, well he's recoding it I doubt he'd be designing it.. but I presume with a recoding, a new design at the same time is only sensible :).
